GREECE, N.Y. – Nick Langdon, a senior at Greece Athena High School, has been a standout on the cross country and track and field teams, contributing much more than just his athletic prowess.
“It’s like having an assistant coach out at practice every day,” said his coach.
Langdon has been part of the Greece Athena cross-country and track and field programs for several years, forming strong bonds with his teammates.
“A lot of these guys, some of them I met three months ago. Some of them I met three Julys ago. And I’ve been with these guys since seventh, eighth grade,” Langdon said.
As a senior, Langdon plays a crucial role in preparing his teammates for practices and meets, both outdoors and indoors.
“His improvement each year has been outstanding. But last year, outdoor track out of nowhere, he qualified for sectionals,” said his coach.
Langdon’s hard work continued to pay off as he advanced to the state qualifier.
“I think that whole day, it was like a whirlwind of emotions. I kind of was not expecting to make it all, and that was a great time that I was able to make it,” Langdon said.
The team has seen significant improvements in recent years, and Langdon’s influence has been a key factor.
“We’re better than we’ve been the last four or five years. Attitudes, efforts. Kids are running more. Came in a little better shape in the summer. And probably all due to them guys,” said his coach.
With graduation approaching, the team will certainly miss Langdon’s presence.
“I hope he comes back and sees us a lot,” said his coach.
Langdon expressed how much he values the camaraderie of the team.
“People in cross-country, it’s a brotherhood. Like these guys are with you day in, day out, and I’ve made some of my greatest friendships from running,” Langdon said.
Langdon plans to study either biology or veterinary science in college.
