Bryce Dallas Howard paid tribute to Robert Redford, who played her dad in the 2016 film Pete's Dragon, by sharing an emotional story.
"It’s taken me a moment to find the right words of gratitude, but I hope this will do," Howard, 44, wrote in an Instagram post shared on Thursday, September 25. "The first time I met Robert Redford was running into his arms — on camera, first take, no rehearsal. Looking back, I can’t think of a better way for us to have met. It was 10 years ago and we were playing father and daughter in Pete’s Dragon."
She continued, "So here I was, running into the arms of a person I never met until this moment, so fast and with such excitement that I literally almost knocked him over! The director yelled cut and Bob burst out laughing, 'You came at me like a cannonball!'"
She went on to say that she will "always remember" Redford as "strong, and vital, and warm."
Howard continued the post by reflecting on the time they spent together off camera. "While filming, we spent hours walking through the New Zealand woods together. He shared his love of geology and why he loved the mountains in particular and how the landscape reminded him of Santa Monica in the 30s and 40s," she shared. "He told stories of driving across the U.S. as a child with his mother, him driving the whole way at the age of eight and how he still loved to drive."
In addition to talking about "moviemaking and family," Redford also opened up about "his love of horses" and shared that he even helped save a horse in need during their time together.

"In fact, on one of his morning drives while filming, he rescued a horse! He could tell the horse was badly abused so he found a sanctuary that could care for it," Howard wrote. "I laughed every time Bob would tell people, 'I stole a horse!' when in reality he saved that horse."
Redford was "curious, generous [and] enthusiastic" during their time working together, Howard recalled.
"He was supportive and everything I could have hoped for from an onscreen father. To know him is a dream come true," she concluded. "And his work as an entertainment entrepreneur, filmmaker, and actor has moved the needle for generations. We’ve lost a giant, but Bob’s legacy will always endure. My heart is with his family and loved ones."
Howard shared the emotional tribute just two weeks after Redford died at the age of 89.
“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy," his publicist, Cindi Berger, told The New York Times in a statement on September 16.
