With under a week to go before the Chicago Bulls tip off training camp, the organization announced a handful of behind-the-scenes moves.
Not only were a couple of staffers given a significant promotion, but the front office added several new names to the player development and analytics departments. As perplexed as I was with the dismissal of Peter Patton, I am at least encouraged by the decision to bolster both units. Particularly when we consider their recent adjustments to play style and emphasis on internal development, these were necessary moves to make.
I know it may not feel like it, but these are the kind of hirings that can move the needle for a franchise. To build a respectful culture, getting the right people in the building and investing in the right areas is essential. To be sure, whether or not these folks are the right people for the job is something we determine right now. Nonetheless, you have to start somewhere!
A Smart Move: Chicago Bulls Bolster Development & Analytics Departments Speaking of training camp, the Chicago Bulls have already made a roster adjustment. According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, former Villanova guard Wooga Poplar has been waived by the team. He previously signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the franchise and suited up for their Summer League squad. The expectation now is that he will join the Bulls’ G League affiliate for the 2025-26 campaign. All things considered, the move means pretty little in the grand scheme of things. The Bulls’ roster has been essentially set at 15 players for a while, and they even have all three of their two-way roster spots full. With that said, I am curious to see if moving Poplar could mean a new face is signed to a training camp deal soon. Even if roster spots aren’t available, this is the perfect time for teams to take some no-risk flyers and evaluate some undrafted/free agent talent. It’s not unusual for us to see the front office cycle through a few names during training camp, especially since it can help fill the G League roster. With Poplar gone, that leaves Caleb Grill and Mouhamadou Gueye as two Exhibit 10 players expected to be with the team at camp next week. Ricky O’Donnell is speaking facts. For as bad as the Bulls’ situation has been in recent years, I’d still like to be in their shoes over a team like the Brooklyn Nets. Sure, they have a ton of rookies to evaluate and could hit on a player or two, but do any of those guys have as high a ceiling as Matas Buzelis or Noa Essengue? While the Bulls may have A LOT they need to fix before becoming a contender, there is no denying that they have two pretty tantalizing young talents on the roster. Essengue, in particular, may have some doubters, but he at least represents the kind of big swing a star-needy team like the Bulls should be taking in the lottery. As bleak as the Bulls' situation is, I'll take Matas and Essengue over all these guys without thinking twice about it. Brooklyn (and Utah and Washington) better land a top-3 pick in 2026, otherwise, uh oh. t.co/BqSgPIcXAq
— Ricky O'Donnell (@SBN_Ricky) September 25, 2025 Sam Smith gave five reasons why the Chicago Bulls could surprise the league this season and creep into the playoffs. For what it’s worth, I don’t think this is as crazy as it sounds. The East is wide open after a slew of major injuries, and we all know Billy Donovan will do whatever he can not to tank. Likewise, Smith pointed out the roster’s depth as one of the Bulls’ underrated qualities. By adding Zach Collins, Kevin Huerter, and Tre Jones in last season’s Zach LaVine deal, there is no question that the Bulls significantly improved their second unit. All three of those guys are legitimate NBA rotation players who also happen to fit into Chicago’s specific style of play rather well. Throw in a new above-average defender in Isaac Okoro and a healthy Ayo Dosunmu, and the Bulls have the makings of a respectable nine-man rotation. Look, I’m not saying I expect the Bulls to be a winning team. Their lack of a confirmed No. 1 or even No. 2 is a major problem that will keep them in Mediocre Land. However, it’s not as if this roster lacks talent that can have an impact on a winning team. That’s a big reason why they need to continue to be active on the trade market this season! I wouldn’t be shocked if contenders come calling about a handful of guys by February. © Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images You love to see Coby White giving back to the community!View this post on Instagram
