A campground that was destroyed five years ago during the August Complex fires will reopen this weekend, Mendocino National Forest officials announced.
In a press release, officials explained that “Hammerhorn Campground, located in eastern Mendocino County on the M1 Road approximately 18 miles north of Eel River Station, will reopen on Friday, Sept. 26.”
The release notes that “the campground, trail and fishing piers were destroyed in the 2020 August Complex fire and subsequently suffered additional damage during winter storms in recent years. Forest Service staff have worked in partnership with California Deer Association and Patriot Restoration Ops to mitigate safety hazards, remove fallen trees and restore the campground for the public to enjoy.”
According to the MNF, “crews have installed new fire rings, barriers and picnic tables, (and) the Ukiah Chapter of the California Deer Association graciously donated the picnic tables for the restoration project. Non-potable water is available at the campground, but there is no garbage service. The campground will remain open through the rest of hunting season and will close in early November.”
In the meantime, the MNF adds that: “Crews will continue to touch up the campground, including working on a bathroom, painting gates and possibly reseeding areas for erosion and invasive plant control. The Forest Service is also considering options to restore the pipeline for the lake and to remove log decks for biomass.”
As for fire restrictions, MNF officials also announced that they “rescinded fire restrictions as of Sept. 19. Forest visitors in possession of a valid California Campfire Permit may have open campfires and camp stoves anywhere on the forest including designated wilderness areas, dispersed campsites and in developed recreation sites, including campgrounds.”
