Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry hilariously applaud US fan’s brutal heckle at Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup hasn’t even teed off yet, but Rory McIlroy and Team Europe have already experienced their first dose of heckling from the New York crowd at Bethpage Black.

During his final practice round on Thursday, the five-time major winner was subjected to a comment from a fan that was so good that it had his European Ryder Cup teammates Shane Lowry and Tyrell Hatton acknowledging and applauding it.

In a clip posted by Golf Channel’s Gary Williams, the career Grand Slam winner was seen buttoning up his polo shirt, and one Team USA fan saw a glimmer of an opportunity to strike, and a glorious one at that.

“You don’t need a button to choke, Rory!” he yelled as others in the crowd burst into cries of laughter.

Even the Northern Irishman found it funny, seen pointing back at the heckler, saying: “That’s a good one.”

But the light-hearted jab was enjoyed even more by his Ryder Cup teammates, with both Hatton and Lowry turning round and pointing their fingers in the direction of the fan to give their own seals of approval.

McIlroy wasn’t the only European targeted, as the New York crowd had already fired shots at Matt Fitzpatrick in their Wednesday practice round after showing signs of some early struggles.

Attempting to chip onto the green from the rough, one fan blurted out:  “Ohh, backwards shot, I should try that – That’s why I shoot a 97!”

The 31-year-old’s chipped shot attempt subsequently went wayward and fell slightly short of reaching the green, and his second attempt was even worse than the first, which, of course, saw the American faithful revel in delight.

Collin Morikawa calls for more ‘craziness’

It was only 24 hours ago when Team USA’s Collin Morikawa called for the Bethpage Black crowd to be louder, dubbing them “tame” throughout the practice rounds.

“I’ll be honest, I think it’s kind of tame so far, Tuesday and Wednesday,” Morikawa said on Wednesday. “I know tomorrow is going to be pretty bad but I hope Friday is just absolute chaos.

“I’m all for it. I think it feeds into who we are and the American players and the American Team. We want it. Like we want to use that to our advantage.”

    Confirmed pairs for Friday morning

    All times UK

Match 1: Rahm and Hatton vs DeChambeau and Thomas – 12:10pm Match 2: Aberg and Fitzpatrick vs Scheffler and Henley – 12:26pm Match 3: McIlroy and Fleetwood vs Morikawa and English – 12:42pm Match 4: MacIntyre and Hovland vs Schauffele and Cantlay – 12:58pm

“I think every sport uses their home crowd to their advantage, and just because we don’t play in a setting like this doesn’t mean the craziness of New York and the rest of the country that people are traveling in from, it doesn’t mean that we can’t use that to our advantage.

“I think we really have to tap into that. I hope they come strong. Watching all these kids, I know they want autographs, but come Friday, I hope they go crazy.”

Team USA – captained by Keegan Bradley who elected against picking himself to play – face a tough challenge to wrestle the Ryder Cup back from Europe on home soil after being throughly dismantled by Europe in Rome back in 2023.

But with the advantage of having the home support from the crowds, and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in their ranks, Team USA will be hoping to exact revenge on their European foes, led by Luke Donald, in what is sure to be a blockbuster golfing spectacle.
