Sarah McLachlan Reveals ‘Angel’ Was Written About This Surprising Rock Star

’90s folk rock star Sarah McLachlan, fresh off her appearance Tuesday on The Jimmy Kimmel Show, shed new light on the inspiration for one of her biggest hit songs, Angel, from her 1997 record Surfacing. The 57-year-old Lilith Fair star sat down with radio personality and podcaster Zach Sang following the September release of her latest album, Better Broken. While appearing on The Zach Sang Show, the Canadian songstress shared the inspiration for her 1997 hit and what she really thought of the album Surfacing.

With pressure mounting from her record label for the singer to release a new album following the success of her 1993 release Fumbling Toward Ecstasy, McLachlan explains she needed time to “regroup.”

Looking for songwriting inspiration, McLachlan purchased some magazines and found the story that would inspire her to write Angel.

‘I just need to regroup and get some of my soul back in place and get grounded again so I thought, well that worked with Fumbling, so I'm going to go and try and, you know, rekindle this feeling. And I remember being kind of stuck in my head and I had bought some magazines and I read this article in Rolling Stone about Jonathan Melvoin, the keyboard player for The Smashing Pumpkins, the story about him overdosing in a hotel room, and just this flood of empathy and this feeling of connectedness to this story of like I'm never going to do heroin in my life but I've been in that hotel room on tour just feeling so alone and lost and how can I, you know, start to hate myself. And that song, like, within two days came out in its entirety. It was like it just got channeled through me.’”

McLachlan also shared more about her songwriting process, admitting she’s not “prolific,” while also confessing she didn’t think Surfacing was a good album, but she knew Angel was “good.”

“It usually takes months if not years to finish a song and it was so quick and, um, I remember at the end of the process of the record too, I put the record out and I remember telling my friend, ‘I think this album sucks but Angel's really good.’ I just had no perspective. I still, I mean, I don't think that now but in the moment, like, I was so — we just worked the songs to death in my mind and I had no perspective.”

Angel went on to become one of McLachlan’s biggest hits, topping the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and reaching the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
