What does the Arizona Cardinals’ new end zone design vs. Seattle Seahawks mean?

The Arizona Cardinals unveiled a new look for their end zones ahead of their game against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football.

It is an homage to the state of Arizona and its state flag.

It’s a firm nod to the state flag

What does the Cardinals’ new end zone design stand for?

The design pays tribute to the Arizona state flag, with 13 alternating red and yellow rays symbolizing both the 13 original colonies and the western setting sun.

The design’s red and yellow colors pay homage to the Spanish flag brought to the area by Coronado..

The bottom half of the flag features the same blue as the U.S. flag, while the copper star highlights Arizona’s status as the nation’s largest copper-producing state.

What do the Cardinals’ new uniforms mean?

Along with the new end zones, the Cardinals are debuting their NFL x Nike Rivalries uniforms, featuring a design inspired by “the harshness of the desert heat, the shards of sand in a storm, and the tan, red, and copper tones that reflect both the Desert Cardinal and the commerce that helped build the state.”

The state flag is also incorporated into the jersey through an outline of Arizona, while the helmet features a sandblasted matte finish and a 3D birdhead logo with a copper beak.

Owner Michael Bidwill released a statement before the season, describing how the team’s new look connects to their city and state.

“We are thrilled to be part of the new Rivalries program and thank the NFL and Nike for including us in this inaugural group,” Bidwill said.

“The design elements of the Cardinals Rivalries uniforms reflect the strength and toughness required to thrive in the desert and celebrate the passion and perseverance that define us.

“Coincidentally, a couple of days ago so many people saw the power, speed and ferocity of the Arizona sandstorm that is such an integral part of our Rivalries uniform design and a fitting metaphor for our identity as a team and a region.

“When we wear these uniforms for the first time against the Seahawks at State Farm Stadium, I hope Cardinals fans see them as a true embodiment of our team, our fan base and the spirit of Arizona that we proudly represent.”

This season, each NFC West team, along with the AFC East squads, will participate in the Rivalries program.

Each team selects one home game against a division rival, with the home team wearing a unique uniform that Nike said was “brought to life by pulling inspiration from the history of each market and the aspects of the community that only that team’s city embodies.”
