Graham Nash, 83, Says He Still Sends Joni Mitchell Flowers Every Year on Her Birthday

Graham Nash and Joni Mitchell may have broken up decades ago, but the legendary singer/songwriters are still on good terms.

Nash, 83, who rose to musical superstardom as a member of the Hollies and Crosby, Stills, & Nash, spoke out in a new interview about the first time he met Mitchell, 81, a legendary musician in her own right. In fact, the duo is on such good terms that Mitchell still receives flowers from Nash every year for her birthday.

"Joni Mitchell — Joan — was a friend of David (Crosby). The first time we met, she took me back to her hotel and played me the most beautiful songs I’d ever heard, including Chelsea Morning, Little Green, and Both Sides Now," Nash told the UK's Times.

The musician went on to say that he knew he was hooked right away, and he's still in touch with Mitchell to this day.

"I’ve always been attracted to beautiful, intelligent women and I immediately fell in love. We were together just over two years and I’ve sent her flowers on her birthday ever since," he shared.

Nash previously opened up about which song of Mitchell's was his favorite. He cited "River" off her album Blue as his top track, according to a 2024 piece in Far Out Magazine.

“We were a couple for two years – and I watched her write many of the songs on Blue. She didn’t finish it until after we parted,” he said. “’River’ made me sad because it chronicled the end of our relationship, but also elated because it was such a beautiful song, and she had the courage to bare her soul. We were very much in love. I treasured that relationship.”

    How He Met David Crosby

While Mitchell was one of his great romantic partners, Crosby was Nash's best friend. In the Times piece, Nash shared that he was introduced to Crosby by Mama Cass in 1966.

"He was lying with a shoebox lid on his chest, separating the seeds from some marijuana stems. Keeping eye contact, he rolled the most perfect joint I’d seen," Nash recalled. "I used drugs too but if I’m addicted to anything it’s sugar. I do like a Mars bar, usually late at night."

Crosby soon took a dark turn into addiction, but ultimately triumphed before dying in 2023.

"David could darken a room with his addictions but he was also charming, caring and a brilliant musician," Nash shared. "Devil or angel, he was my best friend for 50 years; he died in 2023. Making the first Crosby, Stills & Nash record in LA was joyous. David, Stephen and I created a magical sound together."
