Appearing on Thursday's edition of Good Morning America, Richie spoke at length about his contributions to the music industry, as well as his relationship to his classically trained pianist grandmother, Adelaide Mary Brown.
Speaking about his grandmother's view of his work, Richie then went on to reveal that he specifically feared her reaction to the 1977 hit, "Brick House."
"'Brick House' will always be... I mean forget about it," Richie told GMA host Robin Roberts when asked to name his personal favorite Commodores song.
Yet even then, the bestselling artist admitted that, initially, he was skeptical about the song's potential, thanks in large part to its continuous references to a woman's figure being built like "a brick house."
"This was the only song where I thought my grandmother was actually going to disown me," Richie said. "I tried to explain this to my grandmother: 'This is a group song. I didn't write all the lyrics,' you know?"
Interestingly, Richie also said he felt the song was also a bit disrespectful when he was working on it with the Commodores. However, he promptly changed his mind when the song proved a massive success, peaking at number 5 in the U.S. and number 32 in the U.K. Singles Chart.
"I thought it was kind of disgraceful myself, until it became a hit," Richie said with a smile.
