Monica and Tracy on General Hospital may have had a rocky relationship, but their portrayers, Leslie Charleson and Jane Elliot, were close friends for decades.
Charleson passed away last January, and General Hospital is paying tribute to her legacy with Monica’s passing. Ahead of those episodes, Elliot opened up about her friendship with Charleson and the challenge of honoring Monica months after Charleson died.

Speaking with Variety, Elliot didn’t hold back, revealing that playing Tracy mourning Monica forced her to grieve the loss of Charleson two times this year.
“It was very, very difficult to play her alive when she had already passed in real life. It extended the mourning because we had to keep her alive when she wasn’t. I had to mourn her death twice,” the ABC soap star expressed.
Elliot shared that Monica and Charleson are one in the same. Charleson created Monica’s legacy, so without her, there would be no Monica Quartermaine, or at least, not the one General Hospital fans loved and adored.
“You know, Monica was Leslie, and Leslie was Monica. I had shared experience with Monica, and I had shared experience with Leslie, so she left me twice,” Elliot said, revealing that once was hard enough, but twice was beyond heartbreaking.
Tracy has been on an emotional roller coaster ride since losing Monica. Art has imitated life for Elliot, who lost her beloved friend of nearly six decades when Charleson passed.

General Hospital Stars’ Off-Screen Friendship
Elliot and Charleson met in 1965 when they were young adults. Charleson was dating a guy in a play Elliot was working on, and a friendship was born. They spent a lot of time together bonding, but lost touch after the play for years.
Then, as fate would have it, Elliot was hired for General Hospital over a decade later to play Charleson’s on-screen nemesis and sister-in-law. The two women became integral parts of each other’s lives on and off-screen.
From birthday parties to vacations to Charleson planning Elliot’s bridal shower, they went through the good, the bad, and the ugly of life together.
“She was an integral part of my life,” Elliot stated about Charleson.
