Mel Owens is tackling backlash head-on.
The former professional football player, 66, began his journey as The Golden Bachelor on Wednesday, Sept. 24. During the show's premiere, Owens was forced to confront controversial comments he made about his cast over the summer, saying on a podcast he would only consider women between the ages of 45-60.
"I'm excited to meet the women, but I'm nervous the women are going to have misconceptions about me," Owens admitted in the episode's opening scene. "They ask me [on the podcast], 'what's your preferences?' So I just said 45 to 60. I told [the host], you know, 'try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.'"
"I messed up. I was wrong. I replay it in my head a lot. I have regrets and I'm sorry for all things I've said on the podcast," he continued. "I know what a lot of people are thinking about me, but that's not who I am."
The show also included a few of the contestants' reactions to his comments.
"I was offended, just because someone might be 50 doesn't mean they are more attractive than someone who is 62," said one contestant. "We all can say really dumb things sometimes, so I needed to form my own opinion." said another.
"If he's really looking for somebody in a younger age category, what am I even doing wasting my time?" added a third.

Owens spoke to the women about the controversy for the first time following the limo entrances. After all the contestants had entered the mansion, he apologized for his comments before leading the group in a toast.
"This has exceeded my expectations. And every one of you ladies is wonderful," he began. "And some of the questions were about the podcast that I did, and I sincerely apologize. It was insensitive, unfair, and I thought to myself, you know, 'what the puck?'"
"It's truly a privilege for me to be the Golden Bachelor," he added. "I hope you forgive me, and let me earn it back."

The women appeared to accept Owens' apology, with a couple stating they were impressed at how he addressed the "elephant in the room."
