ESR Hydrid Magnetic Case iPhone 17 Pro Max REVIEW

Grippy-rubberized MagSafe compatible case with kickstand

Before the Apple event each September, I consume rumors and gossip about the upcoming product launch and dive into the tech, features, and accessories. I am not sure if my excitement is fueled more by the Apple gear or by the third-party tech upgrades, gadgets, MagSafe features/charging, etc. I am regularly amazed that a simple concept of a phone case can result in so many variations, features, tricks, and sometimes gimmicks. The ESR Hybrid Magnetic case will provide ample protection for your new phone, while providing many convenient features.

The ESR Hybrid Magnetic Case arrived in a 3 5/8 inches wide by 6 7/8 inches tall by 3/4 inches thick retail package.  The cover panel featured the blue-green ESR logo and black font product name along the top left, a military-grade 3x drop-resistant logo along the top right, two product feature icons (3x military-grade protection, versatile stash stand), and a picture of an action-drop feature along the bottom. The primary image featured a clear and black case in vertical mode, and a black case in horizontal mode with the kickstand deployed.

The right side panel provided a legalese product statement, and the left side panel added a fun “TECH MADE EASIER” motto.  The rear panel was by far the best aspect of the packaging.  The top panel displayed three distinct images of the phone, along with various utility options for the kickstand.  I liked the focal point of the imagery, the color, and the layout.  Lastly, the lower part of the panel featured three product icons (military-grade protection, versatile stash stand, and strong magnetic lock), recycling logos, and a product UPC barcode.

I opened the packaging and removed the 1.7-ounce, 3 1/4 inches wide by 6 9/16 inches tall by 1/2 inches thick green-colored iPhone 17 Pro Max case, along with the loose pamphlets (care card, ESR MagSafe product featurette, and instruction pamphlet).  If you have not yet seen the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max, you may not have noticed the changes to the camera.  The 17 Pro Max, like the 16 Pro Max before it, still has three cameras. However, the upper flash, lower lidar, and microphone are moved to the far right of the camera region on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The case provided specific cutouts for each of the cameras, lidar, flash, and microphone. The cutouts surrounded the components without blocking their function. The camera region was protected by a 3-inch-wide by 1 13/16 inches tall plastic rim and a metallic kickstand.  The entire camera region measured 3/16 inches tall at the corners and 1/8 inches thick along the upper, lower and side panels.  The main segment of the case’s rear had a green-transparent plastic and included a MagSafe ring.

The case’s right side featured an upper 5/16-inch-long by 1/8-inch-wide action button and dual 7/16-inch-long by 1/8-inch-wide volume buttons.  The lower section provided the ESR name etched into the plastic surface.  The left side panel featured a 3/4-inch-long by 1/8-inch-wide power button and a 3/4-inch-long by 1/8-inch-wide camera button with a touch-sensitive material.  The bottom panel had cutouts for the USB-C port (9/16 inches wide by 1/4 inches tall) and dual speaker cutouts (5/8 inches wide by 1/8 inches tall).  The outer rubbery surface covered the side panels and provided ~1/16 inches screen protection.  Each of the corners had a slightly raised bumper for added corner protection.

I slid the right side of my phone into the case, walked my fingers around the top, side, and bottom panels, and felt a satisfying click as the phone was securely seated within the case. The main features of the Hyrbid Magnetic Case were the foldable kickstand that surrounded the camera and the accessible MagSafe ring for accessories and charging.  The instruction manual did a great job at showing the various methods to utilize the kickstand and the 69-degree opening angle. Furthermore, it provided warnings about opening the kickstand’s hinge too far and cautioned against the phone toppling over.  With the kickstand deployed, you can view your phone in either horizontal mode (with the volume buttons facing up or down) or in a semi-reclined vertical orientation.  The kickstand cannot allow for full vertical placement, unlike the SUPCASE, which I have recently reviewed.

The case provided a premium rubbery/grippy feel without adding much weight to the phone. When combined, the encased iPhone 17 Pro Max weighed 10-ounces. I liked the green color, the raised screen bezel protection, and the rear camera/lidar/flash/microphone cutouts. The USB-C port was easily accessible, but it lacked protection against dust and debris. The raised buttons had a pleasing click-feel and reliably controlled the phone’s features.  The camera button had a touch-capacitive layer that allowed for camera control within the App.  You can swipe your finger side to side and adjust the camera focal point, snap a photo, or change modes. I appreciated that the case did not inhibit any of the cases features and further enhanced the iPhone 17 Pro Max experience. My only critique was with the tendency of the rear plate to attract smudges/fingerprints.

I have used the ESR Hybrid case over the last week and have had only one close-call. While playing Clash Royale before lunch, my 6-year-old daughter tried to climb into my lap and accidentally knocked my phone out of my hand. The iPhone hit my dining room table and then toppled ~3 feet to the floor. It landed on the lower right corner and ended face up. The camera protector and kickstand did a great job of protecting the lens/surface. I have not had any screen damage, chips, or scratches. I will be adding a screen protector in the next few days. I have charged the phone each night and found no cable obstruction. Under brighter light, the olive surface picks up a minty green color-way. Under less light or darker conditions, the device adopts a forrest green darker color.

Outside of the smudging and fingerprints, and the inability to see the base phone color, the ESR Hybrid Magnetic case should be near the top of your iPhone 17 Pro Max case search. For the price, you will likely not find a more protective, feature-filled case for your new device.
