Coffee Lovers Are Feeling Jittery After Announcement of Mass Starbucks Store Closures

In some way, shape or form, we're all creatures of habit. That may apply to the way you drive to work in the morning, or your very specific coffee order. Because, let's face it, for most of us, a cup of coffee (whether it's short, tall, grande or venti) is the way we like to start our day. Or, in some cases, need to start our day when that caffeine jolt is necessary to get you going.

For Starbucks customers, you very likely have the same coffee order every day. And hit up the same Starbucks store with your request. In fact, yo wear your robust Starbucks Rewards account like a badge of honor. But what if, one day, your go-to Starbucks no longer exists? Quelle horreur, am I right? On Sept. 25, the company announced they are closing more than 400 Starbucks stores across the U.S. and Canada, with roughly 900 corporate employees being laid off in the process.

When Brian Niccol took over as CEO of the coffee chain a year ago in September, 2024, it was obvious changes were coming, but as a caffeine-loving society collectively crossed our fingers that it wouldn't mean store closures. That's not the case. Niccol announced that the Starbucks will close approximately 1% of its stores, which equates to more than 430 locations.

Ultimately this is a cost-cutting measure to help bring Starbucks, and its earnings, back to life. In recent years they've been riddled with problems, from an increase in coffee competition to rising prices. Because the last thing even the most loyal customer wants to see if the price of that PSL go up...again.

When Will Starbucks Start Closing Stores?

In his Sept. 25 letter, Niccol said that the store closures will be complete before the end of the company's fiscal year, which is at the end of this month. That means any Starbucks locations facing a closure will be shut down by next week. With that in mind, start plotting our your new morning coffee ritual accordingly if your store is among those being cut.

"I know these decisions impact our partners and their families, and we did not make them lightly,” Niccol says in his letter. "I believe these steps are necessary to build a better, stronger and more resilient Starbucks that deepens its impact on the world and creates more opportunities for our partners, suppliers and the communities we serve."
