Scottie Scheffler heads to the Ryder Cup hoping for tears of joy after another historic season.
The world No. 1 will make his third consecutive appearance at the biennial competition, which pits Team USA against their European rivals at Bethpage Black this week.
Scheffler could well be the X-factor that inspires his team to success on home turf, as the Americans look to snatch back the cup they lost in Rome two years ago.
But if that is to happen, things will need to go far more smoothly for the four-time major winner this time around.
Scheffler tears cap Team USA horror show
At the Ryder Cup in 2023, Scheffler was left in tears after he and partner Brooks Koepka found themselves on the wrong end of history.
The pair were dismantled 9&7 by Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg of Team Europe, who secured the largest margin of victory in any 18-hole match played across the 44 editions of the tournament.
In what was a truly rare occurrence, the competition was wrapped by the 12th tee, despite the chances of a Ryder Cup match ending on the 11th hole being less than one per cent.
The humiliation handed out by Hovland and Aberg helped Europe extend their dominant start at Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome, and a 3-1 overall victory in that morning foursomes session powered the hosts into a huge overall lead.
Scheffler was left devastated, and was seen wiping away tears as he was consoled by wife Meredith.
He was then driven away on a buggy, bringing the curtain down on misery that lasted just two hours and 19 minutes.
“Horrible situation for the Americans, quite embarrassing for them,” one TV announcer said, after witnessing the crushing defeat.
The victorious Hovland, meanwhile, was in far better spirits.

“It’s nice to kind of speak our own language and we understand each other.
“Obviously same humour, same culture. (Ludvig’s) a stud.
“He doesn’t miss a shot, so it’s easy when I’m playing well and he’s playing well and we are just feeding off of each other.”
Both Hovland and Aberg will return for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage this month, where Scheffler and the US are slight favorites.
Scheffler has won two majors in 2025 – the PGA Championship and The Open ChampionshipWhat is Scheffler’s Ryder Cup record?
The world No. 1 has starred throughout 2025 again, with six more career victories including at the PGA Championship and The Open Championship.
Despite dominating on the PGA Tour, he has had some tough moments at the Ryder Cup.
Scheffler made his debut in 2021, back when he was regarded as one of the best players on the PGA Tour without a win.
He teamed with DeChambeau in the fourballs and defeated the pairings of Jon Rahm/Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood/Hovland, before also beating Rahm in the singles.

Alongside the humiliation against Hovland and Ludvig, the Dallas native was frustrated by Rahm in the singles.
His overall Ryder Cup record stands at 2-2-3 heading into 2025.
In front of a home crowd at Bethpage, Scheffler will hope to boost his tournament record — and lead the US to a much-desired victory.
Should he do so, expect to see some tears of joy, two years on from that humiliation in Rome.
