‘Not doing himself any favours’ – Jobe Bellingham handed rough assessment of Borussia Dortmund start

Borussia Dortmund boss Niko Kovac has lifted the lid on Jobe Bellingham’s lack of game time since his arrival at the club.

The 19-year-old emulated brother Jude in moving to the Bundesliga giants this summer for an initial £26.9million deal.

Jobe played a pivotal role in Sunderland‘s promotion to the Premier League last season but an offer from Dortmund saw him turn down the opportunity to try his hand in England’s top flight.

The midfielder has featured in all six of Dortmund’s matches this season but has so far struggled to cement himself as a regular in the starting XI.

The former Birmingham City academy graduate has started just twice under Kovac, his last coming in the 3-0 win over Union Berlin on August 31.

He is yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Dortmund while clocking up a total of just 154 minutes in the Bundesliga.

Jobe has slipped down the pecking order in recent weeks behind Felix Nmecha and Marcel Sabitzer while Pascal Gross started the 2-0 victory over Heidenheim.

    Kovac’s honest assessment

Kovac revealed that high competition within the squad is why the Englishman has struggled to force his way into the starting line-up.

“Everyone wants to play every minute, but then you only need 11 players,” Kovac told German outlet Kicker.

“When you sign a contract here, it’s not only well paid but it also means that there’s a hell of a lot of competition.”

Kovac also made reference to Jobe’s previous exploits in the Championship, hinting that he may need time to adjust to the rigours of top-flight football.

The Dortmund boss claims that while is a ‘very talented player’ he ‘obviously comes from the English second division’.

“Jobe is a player who has great potential, but a player who naturally has to grow into the game here.

“You can’t make the mistake of applying too much pressure, despite the name.

“I think that’s not doing the boy any favours, and the boy isn’t doing himself any favours.”

    Unwanted media attention

The England Under-21 star has become a talking point in the German media in recent weeks.

It comes after Jobe’s father Mark held a heated discussion with Borussia Dortmund’ sporting director Sebastien Kehl following the 3-3 draw with St Pauli on the opening day of the season.

He was hauled off at half time in a match that saw Dortmund let slip a two-goal lead late on to draw 3-3.

Bellingham is yet to make an impact at Dortmund

According to BILD, Mark was left incensed at the decision to take his son off while fuming at the team’s performance.

Jobe started one further match after the reported outburst and has since been used sparingly.

Speaking about the current unrest before Sunday’s 1-0 win over Wolfsburg, Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken told DAZN: “It’s a pity that we have the topic of Jobe every three or four days before and after the game.

Kovac faced the wrath of Jobe’s father after substituting him at half time against St PauliGetty Jobe has much work to do if he is to convince Kovac to put him back into the starting XIGetty

“The boy is 19 years old. He already performed at the Club World Cup. We don’t think in days or weeks, we think in years.

“Jobe has a five-year contract, and we are absolutely convinced that he will make his way here with us. We don’t need to constantly talk about Jobe before and after every game.”
