Borussia Dortmund boss Niko Kovac has lifted the lid on Jobe Bellingham’s lack of game time since his arrival at the club.
The 19-year-old emulated brother Jude in moving to the Bundesliga giants this summer for an initial £26.9million deal.
Jobe played a pivotal role in Sunderland‘s promotion to the Premier League last season but an offer from Dortmund saw him turn down the opportunity to try his hand in England’s top flight.
The midfielder has featured in all six of Dortmund’s matches this season but has so far struggled to cement himself as a regular in the starting XI.
The former Birmingham City academy graduate has started just twice under Kovac, his last coming in the 3-0 win over Union Berlin on August 31.
He is yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Dortmund while clocking up a total of just 154 minutes in the Bundesliga.
Jobe has slipped down the pecking order in recent weeks behind Felix Nmecha and Marcel Sabitzer while Pascal Gross started the 2-0 victory over Heidenheim.
Kovac’s honest assessment
Kovac revealed that high competition within the squad is why the Englishman has struggled to force his way into the starting line-up.
“Everyone wants to play every minute, but then you only need 11 players,” Kovac told German outlet Kicker.
“When you sign a contract here, it’s not only well paid but it also means that there’s a hell of a lot of competition.”
Kovac also made reference to Jobe’s previous exploits in the Championship, hinting that he may need time to adjust to the rigours of top-flight football.
