Actress Valerie Bertinelliis sharing some insight into her 26-year-long marriage with late musician Eddie Van Halen.
Entertainment Weekly reported that Bertinelli briefly spoke about her relationship with Van Halen, the father of her 34-year-old son, Wolfgang Van Halen, in the September 24 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. During the talk show episode, Drew Barrymore, her desk co-host Ross Mathews, and Bertinelli discussed the reported trend, called “Bob the Builder," wherein individuals ask people they've met on dating apps to assist in making improvements to their home.
Bertinelli said she believed "it's a great idea." She said, however, that she "has never been on a first date," even though she was married to Van Halen until their 2007 divorce. She also had an 11-year marriage with Tom Vitale before finalizing their divorce in 2022.
Barrymore then teasingly surmised that the reason Bertinelli hasn't had a first date is because "she goes straight to marriage."
"Pretty much," replied Bertinelli with a smile.
Bertinelli clarified that "no one has ever asked [her] out on a date." Barrymore responded with disbelief, "You're Valerie Bertinelli. How the hell is that possible?" Bertinelli then explained that she "got married at 20" to Van Halen.
"I was married for 20 some odd years,” said the actress.
After some encouragement from Barrymore, Bertinelli shared details about her first time interacting with Van Halen.
"My brother Patrick, brought us to the concert that [Van Halen] were having in Shreveport, Louisiana. My parents lived out there, and we just made eyes and then we talked backstage and then we talked after the show," said Bertinelli, who began starring on the hit show, One Day at a Time, when she was 15. "And then he asked me out to a concert in Oklahoma. So Patrick and I went, and then we were together ever since. Eight months later, we were married."
Van Halen died after a battle with cancer in 2020.
Valerie Bertinelli Discussed Her Relationship With Eddie Van Halen Toward the End of His Life
In a June 2022 interview on The TODAY Show, Bertinelli shared that she had a friendship with Van Halen toward the end of his life. She said while they had "bumpy" moments during their relationship, she discovered that "no matter what you can always find your way back to love and forgiveness" before his death.
"We were able to do that gratefully. I wished he hadn't died after that. It would have been nice to spend more time with him. But I was grateful that we had that," said Bertinelli with a small laugh in the interview.
In the TODAY interview, Bertinelli also got candid about getting divorced twice.
"You never go into marriage thinking that you're going to get a divorce. You always think this is going to last forever. This is it. And here I am, twice divorced. So I don't know everything. So it sucks," said the 65-year-old.
