ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The 2025 Baldwin Richardson Foods Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic is set to celebrate the legacy and tradition of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with organizers about the event’s significance for the area.
The game will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, but the festivities begin with an HBCU College Expo at Blue Cross Arena.
More than 20 HBCUs and trade companies will participate in the area’s first HBCU career fair since before COVID-19, officials said.
“To be able to highlight our college, our opportunity to share what we’ve experienced and have young people learn about those experiences and maybe choose to go to an HBCU is what we look forward to,” Dr. Shirley Green said.
Dr. Green, with the city Department of Recreation and Human Services, expressed excitement about helping students discover opportunities through the expo.
“When they get in here, the music will be going, the laughter will be going, entertainment, activity, and young people will be asking why is it like that? And so they’ll be learning about what an HBCU offers,” Green said.
The city is teaming up with Xperience Live to host the HBCU Classic. Their CEO, Varick Baiyina, transferred from Syracuse University to Howard University in Washington, D.C.
“The resources that I had there were the same resources I had at Syracuse Newhouse School of Communication. I went to the, you know, Cathy Hughes School of Communication at Howard University in D.C., and it changed my life,” Baiyina said.
Baiyina said he hopes today’s students can have the same positive experience he had.
Students will have the opportunity to bring their transcripts and possibly receive a scholarship on the spot. Organizers expect hundreds to attend. Doors open at 10 a.m.
The HBCU Classic game between Central State University from Ohio and Lane College from Tennessee kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rochester Community Sports Complex.
