80s Brat Pack Legend Andrew McCarthy Announces Exciting New Project: What I Found Shocked Me

Andrew McCarthy was never short on friends. As a member of the "Brat Pack," the group of young movie stars that defined what it was like to grow up in the 1980s, McCarthy was often cast alongside a familiar face. Be it Molly Ringwald in Pretty In Pink or Fresh Horses, Rob Lowe in Class, or the whole gang in St. Elmo's Fire, McCarthy had a friend nearby.

It's those bonds at the heart of his new project. On Sept. 24, the Mannequin star announced his new nonfiction memoir, WHO NEEDS FRIENDS: An Unscientific Examination of Male Friendships Across America, out via Grand Central Publishing, an imprint of Hachette Book Group.

"I set out on the road to see some old friends I hadn't seen in years," wrote McCarthy, 62, when sharing the news of his new book. "10,000 miles and 22 states later, I'd spoken to dozens and dozens of men about the role of friendship in their lives. What I found shocked me and opened my eyes. And I gathered it up into WHO NEEDS FRIENDS. It's available for preorder at the link in bio. And will be published 3/24/26."

McCarthy spoke with a variety of people while traveling to places such as Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta, and the Rocky Mountains, according to People. He chatted with cowboys, musicians, and teenagers, to name a few. The conversations led him to reflect on why men have a "difficult time with friendship."

Though McCarthy never stopped acting, he has developed a remarkable career as a travel writer. He initially kept a journal of his experiences. He eventually met the editor of National Geographic Traveler.

"I convinced him after much cajoling to let me write a piece for them," he said in 2012, per On The Red Carpet. "Eventuall,y I said, 'Let me write it, if it doesn't work, you don't pay me.' And he went, 'I can live with that.' So I did a piece for him, and that worked out, so I did more for Traveler.

"And then my editor there, I kept pitching him so much he said, 'Look, go write for some other people, would you?'" continued Andrew "So I started writing for the Atlantic, the Times and numerous things, and nobody really put together that it was the actor Andrew McCarthy writing."

Since then, he has published the young adult novelJust Fly Away, a memoir titled Brat: An '80s Story, and a nonfiction book, Walking with Sam, recounting his 32-day journey across Spain with his son.
