Jesse Williams considers former Grey's Anatomy costar Eric Dane much more than just a friend.
While exclusively speaking to Parade ahead of the premiere for his latest Amazon Prime Video series, Hotel Costiera, Williams, 44, opened up about his close friend and what it was like unexpectedly presenting without Dane at this year's 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.
"Yeah, that's my guy," Williams says. "That's my brother, and we were messaging before, during and after [the awards show]."
"He was rooting for me," continues Williams, who was scheduled to take part in a Grey's Anatomy 20-year anniversary segment with Dane at the Emmys. "If I hadn't heard from him or there was some mystery [surrounding his absence], that might be a little more jarring, but we were talking."

Dane was set to join Williams on Sunday, Sept. 14, to present the award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. But the 52-year-old, who starred as Dr. Mark Sloan in the hit medical drama, was absent seemingly due to his ALS diagnosis.
Williams, who played surgical resident Jackson Avery for 12 seasons and has since returned for a handful of guest appearances, spent a few seasons together with Dane as full-time cast members and has nothing but fond memories.

"We had a lot of good times together, talking about life when we were working together," Williams says. "We had a baseball connection. There's a lot of women on that show. There weren't a ton of guys that we kind of liked to kick it with all the time during those few years, and we just had a meaningful time."
"I think that there's people in your life that you see all the time, but never really know," Williams adds. "The people you see twice a year that you pick right up [with from] where you left off, and you have really a meaningful, present connection. He's in that latter category, which is really nice."

Williams was only in Hollywood briefly as he headed back to Rome in anticipation of the release of Hotel Costiera, on which he plays Daniel de Luca, a former marine working at a luxury hotel off the coast of Italy in Positano.
"It really was a dream come true," Williams says of the experience working on the action-packed series, adding that he's living out a "childhood dream."
He adds, "I'm an athlete. I'm a physical kid that loved action movies. I get to run around and kick some ass, but also do comedy and play with really great comedic actors and explore cultural differences. And also, be on a speed boat and a motorcycle and fast cars, but still be able to act in a drama and have high stakes and urgency. ... So, I couldn't be happier."
Hotel Costiera premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24, on Amazon Prime Video.
