LA JOLLA – A groundbreaking fitness experience using electrical pulses to stimulate muscle contraction, now available in La Jolla, is changing how people view strength training.
FireSnake Fitness recently opened its fourth location in the new Broadway Salon Studios at 1150 Silverado St., Studio 206. The modality employs electromyostimulation via FDA-cleared Miha Bodytech II equipment.
With EMS, electrical impulses are generated by a device and delivered through electrodes on pads adhering to the skin near the muscles being stimulated; those impulses mimic the action potential that comes from the central nervous system, causing the muscles to contract.
It can also be used as a rehabilitative and preventive tool for people who are partially or totally immobilized.
Named for zodiac animals on the Chinese calendar, FireSnake’s founder and chief executive officer, Amy Minnick, notes that the EMS technology she employs is cutting-edge.
“Traditional strength training only contracts 1-2 muscles per second, but EMS technology targets all your muscles simultaneously,” she said. “Imagine 85 full-body muscle contractions per second — it’s a game changer.”
FireSnake said the benefits of EMS are extensive, including everything from tightening and toning muscles to injury prevention, muscle rehab, improved energy, and brain function.
“It’s suitable for everyone — whether you’re a busy parent, recovering from an injury, using a wheelchair, or simply want to maximize your workout in less time,” Minnick said on her website.
A master trainer, Minnick transitioned from a successful pharmaceutical career to pursue her passion for EMS full-time. She says she is committed to helping others feel stronger and more confident.
“This is a total body workout,” said Minnick. “It’s medically cleared for strength training, fitness, rehabilitation, and recovery.”
Minnick explained that the process involves using low-frequency electrical impulses to contract your muscles directly 85 times per second.
“Which is impossible to achieve on your own,” she added. “That’s what makes it time-efficient. It’s only a 20-minute workout, which is equivalent to 2 ½ hours of traditional strength training.”
Another difference between EMS and traditional methods is that EMS is not passive. “You’re not just lying there and the machine contracts you; it’s active,” Minnick said. “You add your voluntary (muscle) contractions on top of that.”
Minnick pointed out that EMS has even been used by astronauts in space to preserve their muscle mass in weightlessness.
“This (EMS) device, called Total Body Electro muscle Stimulation, was developed in Germany and has been used in Europe for almost 20 years,” she noted.
Exposed to EMS first at a fitness conference, Minnick asked demonstrators to “send me the science behind it,” which led her to say, ‘Wow, this is incredible.’ I started training friends and family, and it grew from there.”
Who can benefit from EMS? “The beauty of EMS is that it’s accessible to almost everybody,” noted Minnick, pointing out it can be used by elite athletes who want that “extra edge,” or by fitness enthusiasts who “just want something extra.”
Added Minnick: “Fifteen percent of our clients are over age 65, because this helps with preventing muscle and strength loss, which happens as we age. Also, it’s easy on the joints. We also have clients with mobility issues. If you’re wheelchair-bound, you can do this as well in a seated position.”
Of the outcome of EMS, Minnick said: “It’s the same as traditional strength training. You get muscle growth, building lean muscle mass, and it stimulates your entire (body) core.”
