For the Apple TV+ movie, Matthew plays a bus driver who rescues 22 schoolchildren during the 2018 Camp Fire that killed 85 people. Levi makes his acting debut in the film as Matthew's onscreen son. Meanwhile, Kay also joins her son and grandson in the movie, dropping on the streaming platform on Oct. 3.
"As much as people can say, 'Oh, you got this because of your father or your mother,' they can open the door, but then it's going to be up to me to do my thing once I get in there," Levi said when asked if he feels pressure from being Matthew McConaughey's son. "That's on me."
Matthew also weighed in on the topic of nepo babies. "There's a line between entitlement and shame," he told the publication. "If you can look it right in the eye and deal with it, and if it works out, you'll see, it's a hell of a roller coaster."
Additionally, the Interstellar actor was asked about the advice he has given Levi when it comes to navigating Hollywood and life in the spotlight.
"It's hard to keep your feet on the ground to sift out the real stuff from the BS," Matthew admitted. "But over time you've got to get that sixth sense."
On Sept. 5, Matthew detailed how Levi joined the cast of The Lost Bus at the Toronto International Film Festival. The father of three recalled telling his family about his character's son in the movie.
“’Well, how old is he?’ I said, ‘He’s about your age,’” Matthew shared during a Q&A session of his conversation with Levi, per the New York Post. “And then he goes, ‘Think I could read for it?’ And I didn’t say anything. That wasn’t enough to make me say ‘maybe’ or anything.”
After Levi asked about the part several more times, Matthew said he knew he was serious about auditioning.
“I knew they hadn’t cast the part. Pulled out the camera, worked with him on a scene, and sent that to [the casting director] Francine Maisler, and I said—remember I had a note?—I said, ‘I think it might be good enough for a callback.’ And she wrote back, ‘I think it might be good enough to show to [the director] Paul [Greengrass].'”
Matthew then asked Maisler, “When you do that, will you do me one favor? Will you pull the last name off so it’s just, there’s no McConaughey on the end of that?”
She agreed, and Greengrass soon called Matthew to declare, "‘That’s the guy, that’s the son.’ And then he was told, ‘Well, that happens to be Matthew’s son.’ And in Paul fashion, he was like, ‘Even better!’ … So this is all due to Paul. My family’s in this film because of this man to the left.”
