ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Little Theatre on East Avenue is set to get some upgrades after securing $200,000 in state funding.
State Senator Jeremy Cooney announced the grant on Tuesday for the historic independent theater. The funding will go toward improving two different theater rooms, including replacing chairs, carpeting, and wall coverings. There will also be renovations to make the bathrooms more accessible. It’s slated to begin in 2026.
The funding will also help to cover the cost of window replacement after they were vandalized in July of last year. It’s expected to be complete by January.
The Little Theatre celebrated its 95th anniversary last year, having survived the Great Depression, World War II, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Ayette Jordan, the theater’s executive director, says there are special considerations with renovating a historic building.
“It’s quite expensive and it’s a big undertaking because everything has to be within the parameters marked by the New York Preservation Society,” Jordan said. “And so with just maintaining it and kind of keeping the art deco and the original vibe of the building, but just making sure that we can be modern where we need to be. The gift is just huge.”
The theater is known for showing all kinds of films, including independent, classic, and foreign. It also hosts live music.
