MLB players in horror as star hospitalized with sickening injury after taking 99mph fastball to face

Baseball can be a dangerous game to play at times.

During the pivotal MLB American League Central clash between the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers, with huge playoff permutations at stake, Tigers catcher David Fry took a huge blow to the face from a Tarik Skubal fastball.

With Detroit leading Cleveland 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth inning with no outs and a 2-1 count against Skubal, Fry squared up to try and bunt with runners stationed at first and third base.

Unfortunately, the 99.1-mph fastball clocked the Guardians’ designated hitter straight in the face, with the majority of the force hitting him on the nose.

Bearing the brunt of the impact in its entirety, Fry immediately fell to the ground clutching his face, and the immediate reactions of horror on Skubal’s face, as well as a myriad of players from both teams and the fans in the stadium, highlighted the severity of what had just happened.

The 29-year-old All-Star was tended to by the athletic trainers before getting to his feet on his own accord, and giving a thumbs-up to the crowd at Progessive Field.

He then walked over to a cart where he loaded onto which took him off the field, where he was then transported to Lutheran Medical Center, before transferring to Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus, per Guardians writer Tim Stebbins.

There, he has been undergoing additional observation and testing and was held overnight, with the extent of his injuries unknown at this time, though it is speculated that there are possible facial fractures.

As it pertains to the play itself, the umpires called a foul bunt leaving the pitch count at 2-2. With Fry unable to continue, George Valera came in to pinch-hit, with Skubal’s first delivery after the incident being a wild one which tied the game 2-2.

The Tigers then suffered a collapse and lost the game 5-2.

Skubal acknowledges health is the most important thing

After the game, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt was asked about Fry’s status.

“He’s getting tested. He’s stayed conscious the whole time,” he said. “Definitely some injuries there. So I’ll give you an update tomorrow.”

A devastated – and deeply distressed – Skubal told the media that he instantly reached out to his opponent after the game to check up on him.

“I’ve already reached out to him,” Skubal said. “I’m sure his phone has blown up. Just want to make sure he’s all right.

“Obviously, he seemed like he was OK coming off the field, and then hopefully it stays that way. I know sometimes with those things, they can change.

“So hopefully he’s all right, but I look forward to, hopefully at some point tonight or tomorrow morning, getting a text from him and making sure he’s all good, because there’s things that are bigger than the game, and the health of him is more important than a baseball game.”

With the Guardians’ victory, both teams now sit at 85-72 with just five games to play of the 2025 regular season, though Cleveland currently holds the season tiebreaker advantage.

They will meet again for the second of their three-game series on Wednesday, with the winner taking sole command of first place in the American League Central, at least temporarily, before the series wraps up on Thursday.

With Cleveland now in control of the division, should they complete the job with the regular season ending on Sunday, they will have completed the biggest comeback in MLB history having been 15.5 games back of first place on July 8, and 11 games back on September 4.
