Five Rochester letter carriers assaulted in September, union working with police to minimize risk

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In September, Rochester has seen five assaults on letter carriers, prompting action from the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 210 and local authorities. News10NBC reported on the incidents, which have occurred across the city.

The assaults began on Sept. 5 on Ackerman St. Two more occurred on Sept. 11, one on Clifford Ave. and another at the intersection of Depew St. and Forbes St. The following day, an assault happened on Child St. and Brayer St., and the latest was on Sept. 22 on Maxwell Ave. and Ellicott St.

Monique Mate from the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 210 said, “We’ve had assaults in the past, but nothing to the point of where it’s happening on a regular basis.”

Mate explained that the union is collaborating with the local postmaster, postal inspectors, and law enforcement to address these incidents. “When these attacks are happening, what’s happening behind the scenes is they’re going door to door. They’re trying to find videos. They’re doing the investigation from what we’re being told, they’re following all leads,” Mate said.

The union is urging the public to report any suspicious activity. “If you see anything, say something. If you’re working, go home and check your ring cameras,” Mate said.

Mate mentioned the importance of working with the Rochester Police Department. “They met with RPD just to explain how important it is that, you know, we’re part of the neighborhood and to be aware,” Mate said.

The assaults often involve the theft of mailbags, satchels, scanners, packages, and even personal items. “It sounds like they’re grabbing and going,” Mate said.

The union announced that postal inspectors would offer a reward for information on the attackers. While the reward amount is currently unknown, a similar case in the past offered up to $150,000 for an arrest.
