Man found guilty of attempted assassination of Trump

A man found lurking with a gun near Donald Trump’s Florida golf course last year has been found guilty of attempted assassination, facing a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Ryan Routh appeared to try to stab himself with a pen several times after the verdict was read out, according to US media and court sketches, leading to chaos in the courtroom.

A jury found that Routh, 59, intended to kill Trump, then a former US president and Republican presidential candidate, when he pointed a rifle through a fence while Trump was golfing.

He was also found guilty on the four other charges he faced, including impeding a federal agent and weapons offences.

Routh had to be restrained by court marshals and was quickly dragged him out of the courtroom following the incident.

As he was removed from the room, Routh’s daughter Sara Routh shouted out: “Dad, I love you, don’t do anything. I’ll get you out. He didn’t hurt anybody.”

She claimed the case against him was rigged as she was escorted from the courtroom.

Following the verdict, Trump told reporters in New York that the case was “really well handled.”

“It’s very important. You can’t let things like that happen. Nothing to do with me, but a president – or even a person, you can’t allow that to happen,” Trump said.

“And so justice was served. But I very much appreciate the judge and jury and everybody on that.”

Routh had pleaded not guilty to the charges and defended himself in court.

In his closing argument he told the court he didn’t intend to kill anyone that day.

“It’s hard for me to believe that a crime occurred if the trigger was never pulled,” Routh said.

He pointed out that he could see Trump as he was on the path toward the sixth-hole green at the golf course and noted that he also could have shot a Secret Service agent who confronted him if he had intended to harm anyone.

Prosecutors said Routh spent weeks plotting to kill Trump before aiming a rifle through shrubbery as the Republican played golf on 15 September, 2024, at his West Palm Beach country club.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X that the guilty verdict “illustrates the Department of Justice’s commitment to punishing those who engage in political violence.”

“This attempted assassination was not only an attack on our President, but an affront to our very nation,” Bondi said.

Routh will be sentenced on 18 December.
