Claudia Cardinale, the Italian screen legend whose career spanned more than 130 films and made her one of Europe’s most celebrated actresses, has died at age 87. Her agent confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she passed away on Tuesday, September 23, in Nemours, near Paris.
Cardinale first erupted onto the international scene in the early 1960s and quickly became one of the most prominent Italian stars of her era. She worked with some of the most acclaimed directors in cinema, including Federico Fellini (8 1/2), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Sergio Leone (Once Upon a Time in the West).
Her English-language roles included playing Princess Dala opposite David Niven in The Pink Panther (1963) and Jill McBain, the frontier widow who became the emotional core of Leone’s 1968 epic Once Upon a Time in the West. Cardinale won three David di Donatello Awards — Italy’s equivalent of the Oscars — and was honored with a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 1993.

Stefanie Powers’ Tribute
In Hollywood, actress Stefanie Powers paid a moving tribute to her late friend and co-star. Powers, best known for starring on ABC’s beloved mystery series Hart to Hart alongside Robert Wagner, worked with Cardinale in the 1979 World War II adventure film Escape to Athena, which also featured Niven and Roger Moore.

On Instagram, Powers posted a lighthearted behind-the-scenes photo of the four stars goofing around on set. She wrote, "Our lovely cast in Escape to Athena, our friendships endured through all these years, and now we've just lost Claudia, who’ll be with Roger and David, and I hope I don't join them for a long time."
Powers’ words highlight the bittersweet passage of time, as she now stands nearly alone among her once vibrant circle of co-stars. Moore died in 2017 at the age of 89, while Niven died just four years after Escape to Athena came out, at the age of 73.

A Lasting Legacy
Cardinale’s cultural footprint stretched beyond cinema. She appeared on the foldout of Bob Dylan’s 1966 album Blonde on Blonde, made headlines for wearing a miniskirt to a meeting with the pope, and was often described as embodying both glamour and grit.
In her 2005 autobiography Mes étoiles (My Stars), she reflected: “I was a movie star from a very young age. But I don’t deserve any credit for that — it was a question of fate. There was always a lucky star watching over me.”
