Oklahoma announced on Tuesday afternoon that quarterback John Mateer will undergo surgery on his right hand this week.
Mateer is expected to miss multiple games and could be out for around a month, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The college football insider added some more details about Mateer’s hand injury following OU’s official announcement.
Thamel says the injury is a broke bone in his right hand. It occurred during the first quarter of OU’s win over Auburn on Saturday. Thamel notes the surgery is considered to be “straight-forward.”
He also reports the surgery will be performed in Los Angeles on Wednesday by Dr. Steven Shin. Thamel’s report says Dr. Shin has performed hand/wrist surgeries on other athletes such as Drew Brees, Steph Curry and Mike Trout.

He threw for 271 yards on 36 pass attempts in the win while also leading Oklahoma with 29 rushing yards. Perhaps most impressively, Mateer completed 16 of his last 17 passes in the win.
Sophomore Michael Hawkins is expected to start for Oklahoma for as long as Mateer is out.
Oklahoma is idle in Week 5 and will host Kent State in Week 6.
