The Israeli government is making an already “catastrophic humanitarian situation” worse by moving its forces into Gaza City, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has told the United Nations.
It follows the UK’s decision to recognise Palestinian statehood, which saw Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accusing the British government of rewarding terrorists.
“Israeli forces are escalating the conflict in Gaza City, pounding more homes into rubble, sending frightened families scattering,” Cooper said.
“It is incomprehensible, it is inhumane, it is utterly unjustifiable and it must end.
“All that this action from the Israeli government will do is make a catastrophic humanitarian situation worse.”
The Foreign Secretary said the escalation would also make it harder to free the remaining Israeli hostages.
She described meeting on Monday with a group of doctors recently returned from Gaza, and that “the stories they told would stay with me forever.”
Cooper said: “One told of the screams of toddlers, and the scream of a toddler who she had operated on without full anaesthetic, and how she hoped and prayed that he would not feel pain.”
Doctors had told her how the “absolute basics” of medicine were unavailable, blocked and denied, she said, adding: “We say the words humanitarian crisis, but this is what it means.
“Only 18 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza now remain open, all of them struggling to operate amid severe shortages of fuel, medicine, equipment and staff.”

The Associated Press said that there was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which has repeatedly bombed and raided hospitals in Gaza throughout the war.
The Allenby Bridge Crossing over the Jordan River, also known as King Hussein Bridge, is the only cargo and passenger crossing available to Palestinians in the West Bank that does not lead to Israel. It is also on a key route for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza.
In a separate development on Tuesday, Israel announced a complete closure of the border crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan until further notice after an attack last week that killed two Israelis.
Multiple hospitals in famine-stricken Gaza City have been forced to shut down as Israeli forces advance. Israel accuses Hamas of using medical facilities for military purposes — which could cause them to lose their protection under international law — but the military has often provided little or no evidence of a significant militant presence.
The head of the World Health Organisation, which has partnered with the charity, condemned the strike. “Attacks on health facilities must end. The senseless violence must stop. Ceasefire!” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X.
