CUBS LINEUP — Tonight, the Chicago Cubs begin their final homestand of the regular season. Cade Horton will be taking the ball in what should be his final regular-season start before taking the mound in Game 1 of the Wild Card series (we’ll see if that’s how the Cubs actually play that, but it’s how I’d go about it).
So tonight is about staying healthy and looking sharp. The Cubs still have a top WC seed to win, but there’s still a little bit of time for that. So if Horton is looking good and hits that 75-80 pitch mark, let’s get him outta there.
In any case, take a look at the Chicago Cubs lineup vs Mets lefty David Peterson.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Carson Kelly, C Carlos Santana, 1B Dansby Swanson, SS Justin Turner, DH Matt Shaw, 3B Pete Crow-Armstrong, CFI’ve got more on David Peterson down below, but I do want to first point out his lefty/righty splits this season, as they are rather significant:
vsLHH: .228/.275/.289 (.253 wOBA)vsRHH: .261/.341/.387 (.322 wOBA)
To put those wOBAs into context, there’s not a single qualified hitter below a .265 wOBA this year, which means lefties are collectively hitting worse than the worst hitter in baseball. Meanwhile, a .322 wOBA is roughly equal to (or slightly better than) PCA, Paul Goldschmidt, Mookie Betts, and Willy Adames.
Needless to say, stacking the Cubs lineup with righties makes sense, and that’s just what Craig Counsell is doing: Carlos Santana is at first instead of Michael Busch. Justin Turner is at DH instead of (Kyle Tucker or Moises Ballesteros). Carson Kelly is behind the plate instead of Reese McGuire. And Pete Crow-Armstrong is batting all the way down at ninth.
New York Mets Lineup:
Francisco Lindor, SS Juan Soto, RF Pete Alonso, 2B Brandon Nimmo, CF Mark Vientos, DH Brett Baty, 3B Starling Marte, LF Jeff McNeil, 2B Francisco Alvarez, CPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, RHP
Not much to add on Cade Horton here that wasn’t said above. Tonight may be the final statement on his candidacy for Rookie of the Year, but that’s not as important as staying healthy and looking ready to face the Padres sometime next week (Game 1 or 2).
This will be, however, a pretty significant challenge as the Mets are (1) still trying very hard to reclaim their lost playoff spot and (2) have the best offense in MLB versus right-handed pitching this season: 119 wRC+.
So I guess I won’t be too hard on Horton, no matter what happens.
New York Mets: David Peterson, LHP
David Peterson is up to a career-high 29 starts this season (this will be #30), and although the results aren’t quite as good as they were last year (2.90 ERA), he’s still getting the job done: 3.98 ERA, 3.47 FIP.
In particular, Peterson has done a great job of keeping the ball on the ground (55 GB%), which allows him to maintain a very solid 6.5% barrel rate despite actually a lot of hard contact (46%, 90.6 MPH EV).
