UAE’s International Charity Organization signs 22 agreements in Syria

The UAE-based International Charity Organization announced the signing of 22 cooperation agreements in Syria, covering the construction of homes for affected families, the building and maintenance of hospitals, rehabilitation of schools, drilling of water wells, and food assistance projects.

The agreements, signed on Monday, September 22, also include the launch of other charitable and development initiatives serving various segments of society across multiple Syrian provinces.

A delegation from the organization paid a five-day visit to Syria to assess the conditions and needs of beneficiaries, aiming to support social stability and improve basic services.

Dr. Khalid Abdulwahab al-Khaja, Secretary-General of the organization, said the initiatives reflect the UAE’s commitment to assisting and providing relief to people in Syria.

He added that the organization is keen to expand sustainable projects that ensure a dignified life for vulnerable families and contribute to reconstruction and development efforts, according to the Emirati newspaper Al-khaleej

Al-Khaja noted that the agreements will help provide better service infrastructure and enable vulnerable groups to become more self-reliant. He expressed gratitude to the Syrian partners who facilitated the success of the visit and projects.

Earlier, on September 14, the organization had announced the launch of a package of development, service, and relief projects in Syria worth AED 8 million, as part of its ongoing efforts to support communities affected by the conflict.

In addition to the agreements, the organization will provide healthcare services, distribute dates and food parcels, in line with its mission to promote sustainable development and improve quality of life.

Al-Khaja confirmed that some projects have already begun, including the maintenance of wells, schools, and mosques, as well as food aid programs, benefiting thousands of families across different regions.

Founded in 1984 in the United Arab Emirates, the International Charity Organization (ICO) is a pioneer in humanitarian and charitable work. It operates in 23 countries worldwide, implementing sustainable projects such as mosques, wells, Quran memorization centers, orphan sponsorship programs, and healthcare initiatives.

UN: One in four homes in Syria destroyed or damaged

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, Adam Abdelmoula, said on September 9 that about 16.5 million people in the country are in need of humanitarian assistance, in addition to 2.5 million returnees, internally displaced persons and refugees returning from abroad, many of whom lost their homes during the war.

Abdelmoula highlighted the UN’s work in Syria, noting that the country continues to face a large-scale displacement crisis, with more than 6 million people internally displaced and another 6 million living as refugees worldwide.

He revealed that around 24% of Syria’s housing stock has been destroyed or damaged in recent years, while the UN faces severe funding shortages.

Speaking at a press conference reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Abdelmoula explained that the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan for Syria has so far received only 14% of the $3.2 billion required, undermining the UN’s ability to meet growing needs.

He urged the international community to provide the necessary financial support, warning that the lack of funding threatens to obstruct humanitarian efforts and delay recovery and development programs essential for moving Syria beyond reliance on aid.
