Brockport officials seek relief fund for businesses impacted by delayed bridge project

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Albion recently completed its long-delayed bridge project, while Brockport’s bridge project is now expected to be completed in November.

As a result of the delay, legislators are seeking financial relief for local businesses affected by the construction delays. They are hoping to divert some of the money withheld from the contractor towards a relief fund.

Every day the bridge is delayed, the state withholds $7,000 from the contractor’s payment. Legislators want that money to go towards a relief fund.

Brockport Mayor Ben Reed said several businesses have closed due to the construction. The state has withheld more than $2.6 million from the contractor, which could help businesses cover payrolls and lost revenue.

Last week, County Legislator Jackie Smith, Sen. Rob Ortt, and Assemblyman Steve Hawley sent a letter to the governor urging her to consider the relief fund.

“We have not received any word from the governor. We hope to hear something soon,” Smith said. “We’re very anxious to work with the governor and bring in the relief back to Brockport Village.”

Smith mentioned that if they do not receive a response soon, they plan to reach out to Sen. Ortt and Assemblyman Hawley for further action.

Smith sent the letter last Monday. News10NBC also reached out to the governor’s office but has not received a response yet.

The current completion date for the bridge is set for November. However, some officials expressed skepticism about meeting this deadline and do not want to announce an official date to avoid raising expectations.

If the bridge is completed in November, it will be one year and three months past the original end date of September 2024.
