Clear Lake: The top rated bass fishing lake in the United States is been a somewhat of a disappointment for many anglers lately. Even-though we having a slight change in weather, it was not enough to get the bass started into a fall feeding mode. The bass are schooled up and are moving around. One day they will be at one spot and will have moved to another the next day. The trick is to have a bunch of “honey holes” lined up. Fish all your spots and hope you will get into them. Try throwing spooks and frogs early over matts and DDT Buzz baits along the edges of the weeds. Jigs and the LV500 crank baits fished yo-yo style along with swim baits and drop-shotting with a senko have been producing some nice bass right now. By-the-way, the catfishin’ is going strong right now. Even bass anglers are catching them with artificial baits.
Blue Lakes:Well, typically, this time of the year the Upper Blue Lake and the East Fork of the Russian River receives multiple fish plants. Unfortunately, not a single location in Lake and Mendocino counties is scheduled to receive a single trout plant. Why is that ? Surely this can’t have anything to do with money! California has the most expensive fishing license in the United States.
Trout anglers that are fishing from the shore along Hwy. 20 are catching tsome trout with Power Bait or Salmon eggs off the bottom. Rooster Tails and Super Dupers are a good bet while the trout are feeding on the surface. Cooler temperatures is really whats needed to kick in the trout bite. Maybe a week from now things will get even better?
Don’t forget, quietly, the Blue Lakes (both of them) have become pretty good bass fisheries. Top water baits in the early morning are producing some nice bass. Try drop shottin’ a Robo Worm or slow draggin’ a senko, brushhog or sweet beaver after the sun comes out.
Lake Mendocino: Our hometown lake is producing some nice bass,. The fall feeding frenzy has not started yet. Like Clear Lake, the bass are starting to think about moving into their winter mode. We need some frosty nights for that to happen. Really there is no need to get up super early, if you are on the water by 9 a.m. you are okay. Look for pockets of water that are a degree or two warmer, you will have found the bait fish. Find the bait fish and you find the bass. I would first try fishin’ Crappie Cove. Drop shottin’ or slow moving plastics like a Brushog, Sweet Beaver or Lizard should get you a fish on the other end of your line.
East Fork of the Russian River: Don’t lolly-gock, the stream trout season closes Nov. 15. TIC-Tic-tic time is running out ! Limits are 5 trout per day. This is a great place to teach a kid how to stream fish for trout.. To get there, take the Potter Valley exit off of Hwy. 20, drive 1/4 mile down to the bridge and you are there.
Lake Pillsbury: I’m saving the best for last! The fishin’ on Lake Pillsbury is going strong right now! There are many good reports that have anglers boasting about the incredible fishin’. Bass anglers that have made their way up to the lake have been hooking into 20 plus bass per outing!!! The area along the dam is holding a lot of large bass right now. Also, several of the folks that have been trolling for Trout have been doing quite well. Many over 24 inches long. Most are trolling the west side of the lake.
Take it SLOW and EASY going up the road and, you’ll be okay…
