Columbus announces grocer for second phase of Downtown project, The Peninsula

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Downtown Columbus Inc. confirmed today that Giant Eagle will be joining The Peninsula Phase II, marking the ground floor of a new mixed-use building.

Downtown residents will gain access to a 20,000-square-foot Market District at the corner of Belle and Broad streets. It's the latest addition to a major strategic investment known as The Peninsula, just west of the Scioto River. See previous coverage of The Peninsula in the video player above.

"The addition of Giant Eagle to The Peninsula marks a transformational moment for Downtown Columbus, bringing access to fresh food for the residents of Downtown and Franklinton,” Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said.

The Giant Eagle will occupy the ground floor of a 14-story mixed-use building, which will include an attached parking garage and nearly 250 units. The three floors above Giant Eagle will provide parking, with the remaining 10 floors slated for residential use.

Ginther said the new grocery will enhance food access for Downtown residents, and it is "strategically located" along public transportation stops and major intersections. The residential tower had teased a grocery story tenant, but confirmed Giant Eagle's investment on Tuesday.

Walkable grocery options was a key recommendation in Downtown Columbus' 2022 strategic plan. As the city develops The Peninsula, it is prioritizing the creation of a walkable, bikeable area.

The new development adds to the construction uplifting the area since 2020. The Junto, a boutique hotel with dining options, was the centerpiece of The Peninsula's first phase. It joined COSI and a 230,00-square-foot office building in the neighborhood.

Construction on the new building will begin in 2026.
