ALBANY, N.Y. — The Albany Times Union is reporting that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is no longer paying at least five New York county clerks for administering the Oath of Allegiance to new U.S. citizens at naturalization ceremonies.
The Times Union says clerks have been reimbursed for decades in many counties. In the Rochester area, Genesee and Ontario counties don’t perform naturalization ceremonies.
Orleans County hasn’t had one since at least 2021, and Livingston County hasn’t had a ceremony since 2022, but the clerk says the New York State Association of County Clerk’s is discussing the matter after hearing reports of payments being stopped.
News10NBC has reached out to Steuben, Monroe, and Wayne County to ask if they have stopped getting payments, and are waiting to hear back. We have also reached out to UCIS for comment.
