As wrestling fans await the release of The Smashing Machine, news of a biopic about an entirely different professional from the sport is now circulating.
Kenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr.'s production company Artists for Artists is now developing a feature film about famed wrestler “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Deadline reports.
"Beyond excited for this one!!" Thompson, 47, told the media outlet. "Macho Man is hands down one of the greatest of all time and can’t wait to bring his story to the screen!!!"
The movie is dubbed Macho, and Thompson and Ryan Jr., 43, come to the project as lifelong fans of Savage. Thompson, as Deadline noted on Tuesday, September 23, once worked with the wrestling icon on a Nickelodeon promo in 1999. Macho stems from a completed script by Savage’s late brother Lanny Poffo and Eric Shapiro.
Savage, who died at age 58, was one of the most influential professional wrestlers in the sport, competing from the 1970s through the early 2000s. He was son of a wrestler and wrestling promoter, Angelo Poffo, but initially pursued a baseball career. He then shifted to wrestling after an injury and ultimately adopted the name “Macho Man” in the ring, as Deadline reported.
Savage died of a sudden heart attack while driving in Florida in May 2011. He was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015.
Last month, Thompson opened up exclusively to Parade about The Late Show With Stephen Colbert coming to a controversial end next year.
“It sucks to see Colbert go down,” Thompson said while discussing his latest partnership with Autotrader. “But I think the television landscape is changing dramatically, so I don’t know if it’s a political thing or if it’s just the fact that it’s not making business sense anymore, but it sucks. This dude is one of the greatest comedy minds that we have, and it just happens to be on a show that isn’t fiscally making sense anymore, from what I’m reading.”
