Priscilla Presley Shares Heartbreaking Marriage Decision

Priscilla Presley is sharing her truth in her upcoming book, Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis. The new release contains plenty of revelations about her time with her former husband, Elvis Presley, including insight into why she left their marriage.

Us Weekly shared some intriguing tidbits from Priscilla's new book. She revealed, "I did not leave Elvis because I no longer loved him. I loved him as much on the day I left as on the day we married."

Despite the love she still had for him, Presley explained, "I left Elvis because I needed a life of my own. I was living his life. Just as Elvis was searching for the meaning of his life, I was searching for mine."

As People shared, Elvis first met his future wife in 1959 when she was just 14. In 1963, she moved in with him, and in May 1967, they got married.

The couple divorced in 1972. She has previously shared that he was the "love of my life," and she's consistently noted she needed to explore and build a life on her own.

"My life was his life. He had to be happy. My problems were secondary. I want to grow. I want to do things," she told People in 1978.

In her new book, Priscilla admits that before their split, and before her affair with Mike Stone, her karate instructor, "The marriage had been crumbling for years."

Her dalliance with Stone was "just one catalyst" for the pair's divorce. Priscilla explained that it wasn't the only reason.

The couple's marriage shifted after they welcomed their daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. Priscilla noted that Elvis was "accustomed to coming first" and did not do well having to share his wife with their daughter.

"I became jealous of a nanny taking care of my daughter when I should be taking care of her. I felt guilty about having a nanny there when Lisa woke up in the middle of the night and started crying," Priscilla recalled.

Despite the troubles, Priscilla wrote, "It was painful trying ot keep our family together. I felt like a failure as both a mother and a wife. Eventually, I had to choose."

Priscilla added, "By the time Lisa was 4 years old, I knew I had to make a decision. So I realized it was time for me to go."

Her decision, she admitted, left Elvis "stunned."
