Socializing and networking aren’t what they used to be ever since the COVID-19 pandemic upended gatherings in 2020. Add that to the tensions characterizing 2025, and you have a recipe for continued isolation.

Lisane Basquiat and the Shaping Freedom team hope to change that on Saturday, October 11. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the group is are hosting Soulful Saturdays: Day Party Edition, what they call an intentional party celebrating music, connection and community care.

Taking place at the Novo Brazil Brewery in Mission Valley in San Diego, Soulful Saturdays: Day Party Edition will include a live DJ, karaoke, dancing, interactive games and a forum on wellness, boundaries and legacy.

Basquiat and the Shaping Freedom team pride themselves on their events not being your average event.

“I wanted to create something that was fun,” Basquiat said. “[Something] that was not as focused on networking from a business perspective, but more focused on building relationships and community for people so that there would be a space where they felt safe and welcomed and included, and where we could also have a bunch of fun.”

The first Soulful Saturdays event was held in 2022, created in response to the isolation many felt after COVID-19 and quarantining became part of the American vocabulary. Since then, it’s become a space for people to reconnect, recharge, and explore emotional wellness in the community.

However, there hasn’t been a Soulful Saturdays event in more than a year. The pause, Basquiat said, came after spending much of the last year solidifying Shaping Freedom’s infrastructure, strategic direction and brand clarity.

“We are so excited to resume our offer of Soulful Saturdays to the local San Diego community,”  she said.

Now, she says the timing felt right to bring the day party back, especially as community needs for connection and authentic spaces have only grown.

Though this event is not marketed as an arts networking event, the gatherings often attract creatives, wellness practitioners, and people involved in personal growth work. In past editions, attendees have made lasting friendships, creative collaborations and even launched community projects inspired by conversations sparked at the event.

Originally from New York, Basquiat was accustomed to being around diverse people from all over the world, not necessarily just Black, white and Latino, she said. She felt there were many people in San Diego who also wanted to be in a very diverse space.

“(We want to make) a place (for) people from all sides of any aisle we choose,” Basquiat said. “No matter what it is, political, social, economic, or any other, people who just come together and have a great time with each other, and meet each other where we are.”

Shaping Freedom is a company focused on family legacy, personal growth and helping people improve the quality of the relationship they’re in with themselves, Basquiat said.

“Personal growth, to me, means to shine light on the air, to be willing to have the courage to shine light on the areas in your life that don’t fit,” Basquiat said. “So it means setting boundaries, being clear about what your values are, paying attention to, kind of reading the room of your life and looking at the different patterns that are happening.”

While exploring the emotional complexity of the human experience, Basquiat draws a distinction between true happiness and true joy.

“At the end of the day, I truly believe that there’s happiness and there’s joy,” she said. “Happy is what happens when you go to Soulful Saturdays and you’re hanging out and you’re dancing and eating great food and having great libations and all of that, that’s happiness.

“Joy is when you walk this planet knowing that you’re clear about your boundaries, you can set them with kindness and patience.”

Beyond her work with Shaping Freedom, Basquiat is also known as the sister of the late Jean-Michel Basquiat, a legendary self-taught artist who rose to fame in the 1980s.

In addition to preserving his legacy, she has carved out her own path in the personal growth and wellness space, focused on building spaces that feel inclusive, reflective and expansive.

Basquiat says she wants to keep fostering belonging and connection with Soulful Saturdays. For those hesitant about attending, she has only one thing to add.

“Just come. There’s no downside to it. It’s an incredible experience and opportunity to connect with people, a great way to meet new friends in a safe, welcoming and warm environment…

“There will be a community of people who just want to have a good time and enjoy the company of just kind of being out in a beautiful space on a beautiful Saturday in October.”

Admission to Soulful Saturdays starts at $20. Tickets and more information are available here.
