New Phone, new features, New possibilities. Unless you are anti-Apple and devices that start with “i”, you are aware that September is the month that Apple launches their new phones, watches, and earphones.  This year was no different, with the Apple event on 9/9/25, preorders starting on 9/12/25, and initial availability on 9/19/25. Despite the allure and draw of the Apple event, I find just as much excitement in reviewing new accessories. I cannot imagine purchasing such an expensive device and then leaving it au naturel.

The Unicorn Beetle case arrived in a classy, black-colored retail box.  The cover listed the SUPCASE name/logo at the top of the panel, the Unicorn Beetle name along the middle, and provided a MIL STD logo along the bottom right.  The background had a visually pleasing, repeating three-dimensional square design, reminiscent of the drawings demonstrated/taught by Mark Kistler in the 1990s.   The rear panel had a UPC barcode, five product feature icons (perfect gripping, scratch resistant, shock resistant, duo layer design, accurate cut-out), and the same geometric background.  The right side panel provided California warnings, recycle logos, and listed “Made in China.”

I opened the box, removed the case, and immediately noticed the robust design, the new camera design features, and the overall weight of the product.  The 2.3-ounce case measured 3 1/4 inches wide by 6 3/4 inches tall by 5/8 inches thick and had rubberized, softer side panels and a more rigid plastic backplate.  The edges had a pleasing grippy feel, while the corners had raised, angled (air cushioning) bumpers.  Each corner extended approximately 1/16 of an inch from the case’s side panel. The desert case had a pink/tan plastic accident along the top corner, and the black case had a dark grey accent.  Each case had a 3/8 inch by 1/8 inch action button and 7/16 inches long by 1/8 inches tall volume buttons on the right side.  The left side had an 11/16 inches long by 1/8 inches tall power button and a 11/16 inches long by 1/8 inches tall camera control button.  The camera control button had 19 copper conductors for added camera control.

The lower panel had dual 9/16 inches wide by 1/8 inches tall speaker cutouts and a centralized 1/2 inch wide by 5/16 inches tall rubberized USB-C port cover. The front panel provided a ~3/32 inch raised screen protection that also worked well with screen protectors.  The rear panel provided a new and quite distinct camera protection system.  Compared to previous iPhone cameras, the new iPhone 17 Pro Max utilizes nearly the entire upper surface of the phone’s real estate. Instead of having the three rear cameras, upper flash, and lower lidar at the upper left, like the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the iPhone 17 Pro Max moved the flash and lidar to the far right and had a bigger microphone cutout.  With these changes, the Unicorn Beetle case had perfectly placed cutouts for the cameras, lidar, flash, and microphone.  The entire upper section had a raised protective barrier, with ~1/8 inch raised corners and ~1/16 inch tall raised mid/side segments.  The mid back section had a 2 1/4 inches by 2 1/4 inches wide/tall octagonal MagSafe ring with a 1/2 inch tall by 13/16 inches wide hinge segment.

Even though I typically do not like pink or rose gold colors, I liked the golden accent of the hinge/ring segment against the smoky backplate and the darker side panels.  The ring will sit flush with the back panel when retracted and can extend to approximately 120 degrees.  The stand will allow you to rest your phone in horizontal mode with either side of the phone facing upward.  The ring will also allow for vertical viewing/orientation, or as a finger ring.  I was most impressed with the magnetic nature of the ring and with the ability to charge via MagSafe when the ring was retracted.  Despite my initial reservations about MagSafe charging, I was pleased to find that the device was able to charge at normal rates.  Furthermore, you can still add MagSafe attachment accessories like the Aura Wallet Stand or Pitaka battery.

    Summary:

The Unicorn Beetle case provided a nice blend between utility and glamor. The gold/black color paired nicely with the smoky backplate.  The iPhone’s blue color was able to shine through the rear panel of the desert case more than with the black case, adding a bit more allure/color. I loved the front screen protection, the well-placed camera/lidar/flash cutouts, golden accent buttons, ribbed side panels, raised corners, speaker cutouts, and the USB-C cover.  The buttons were well placed, reliable, and had a pleasing click-feel.  The case did feel a bit bulky, which may be a deal breaker for some.  The already massive Pro Max model felt even bigger with the raised square edges.  The main highlight of this case was the posterior MagSafe-compatible ring.  Charge via MagSafe, enjoy MagSafe magnetic accessories, then deploy the kickstand ring and view your favorite movie or show.  When you consider all of the features and a sub ~$35 price tag, the Unicorn Beetle SUPCASE is a steal.
