She shared that Haley questioned, "You had breast cancer?!" Kotb recalled feeling rattled by realizing that's how her daughter discovered that information. She shared, "I'm like, 'Oh my God! Oh geez!'"
Another conversation Kotb recalled recently took place with her younger daughter, Hope. She said she was reading a book to Hope while the young girl was in the bathroom, and at one point, Kotb asked her daughter what it was like having diabetes.
In May, Kotb visited Today and talked about Hope's diabetes diagnosis. She noted that Hope's diagnosis provided a "priority check" in her life and played a role in her decision to leave the show. She explained, "I can be here and sweating what's happening to Hope in the morning and in the night, or I can be there and feel relief that I can see."
When Kotb asked Hope about having diabetes in their recent bathroom chat, the young girl asked her mom a big question in return. Hope wondered, "What's it like for you? To have me?" Kotb told her daughter, "Having you is a big statement from God saying, basically, 'I gave you the strongest one.' So, I feel really, really lucky."
These in-depth conversations are important, Kotb shared, and they're helping her build a more "profound connection" with her girls. She said, "The fact is, I think we're knowing each other as people, humans. Not just mom or, you know, or kid."
