Hey, the Blackhawks play a (preseason) game tonight! On Sunday, head coach Jeff Blashill said the first round of roster cuts could happen today. We’ll see if that’s before or after the game in Detroit this evening. With a lot of the NHL roster spots either spoken for or with limited options available, we can probably expect the healthy players who are headed back to junior to pack their belongings soon.
The Athletic started rolling out their league-wide team-by-team previews on Monday, starting at the bottom of their projected standings. And… the Blackhawks are projected to finish 32nd. Shayna Goldman, Sean Gentille and Dom Luszczyszyn handled the lengthy write-up, which is solid. Highly recommend reading all of it. While the graphic below is for their most likely scenario, they also offer a best case and worst case. As you might guess, the worst case scenario is essentially what happened last year: a grenade of a season with Connor Bedard being the only bright spot, but this time the young players around him don’t elevate the program much/at all. The best case scenario they have is 84 points, saying:The kids are all right, led by Bedard, exploding for 90 points. The team’s young blue line shows real potential with [Artyom] Levshunov, [Sam] Rinzel and [Alex] Vlasic shining. Add a stellar season from [Spencer] Knight, and the Blackhawks take a big step back toward relevancy.
It’s always: “Will Connor Bedard sign an extension with the Blackhawks?”But it’s never: “How’s Connor Bedard?”Well, he’s pretty good, actually. He’s enjoying his new coach’s system and is ready for the season to get underway ⬇️ t.co/LDfCBSIhtW
— Kalen Lumpkins (@kalenalumpkins) September 22, 2025 Something I found interesting yesterday: when asked about some of the lines and defensive pairs we’ve during camp thus far, Blashill has cautiously said things like “we’re trying a few things” but “nothing’s set in stone.” When he was asked about Lukas Reichel skating on Bedard’s line in the scrimmage yesterday, Blashill backpedaled like a 23-year-old Deion Sanders. That was just for the scrimmage because they were balancing the rosters.
