This must be the death knell for any part in public life for the Yorks. With each scandal, which emerges with shocking regularity, it seems things just couldn’t get worse. And then either Prince Andrew or Sarah Ferguson does something so jaw-droppingly crass that it beggars belief.
This time, though, it is not simply about their innate avarice — it is about the Duchess of York grovelling and sucking up to a convicted paedophile. A man she had publicly declared she would never contact again.
If Jeffrey Epstein truly was threatening to sue her for defamation, as she claims, the honourable path would have been to call his bluff. Ferguson should have had the balls to say to this man – who had already been jailed for sex offences – “Well, go on then, sue me.”
Instead, she wrote him a fawning email praising him as “steadfast, generous and a supreme friend”. She’s always been a gusher, but this was simply revolting — and spineless.
No wonder a string of charities want nothing more to do with her.
For the Duchess, being pictured way back in 1992 having her toes sucked by her “financial advisor“ was humiliating enough. It compounded what was already turning out to be the late Queen’s “annus horribilis”. In Fergie’s own words, it showed that she had turned self-sabotage into an art form.
Lesson learned? Absolutely not. Spool forward a few years and we find her trying to sell access to her ex-husband for a princely bribe of half a million pounds. Unfortunately for Ferguson, the “businessman” who was trying to buy access turned out to be an undercover reporter from the News of the World. Her humiliation, you might think, was complete.
And yet, through some hard work — and, in her defence, she IS a grafter – writing children’s books, taking on PR work and supporting various charities, Ferguson clawed her way back into solvency. In recent years, since the death of one of her fiercest critics, the late Duke of Edinburgh, she has even been accepted back into the Royal Family circle from which she had been excluded.
I don’t think Fergie is a bad woman, but she is a hopelessly misguided woman who, like her husband, has always been seduced by money and motivated by greed. How do you let yourself run up debts of millions of pounds? Especially when your ex is a Duke and his mother the Queen?

It now seems extremely unlikely that she will be able to pen or sell any more children’s books, which have proved a lucrative source of income for her. The Duchess has become a toxic brand, just like her ex-husband – and like the convicted paedophile who continues to ooze poison in death just as he did in life.
There may be more to come about the Yorks’ association with Epstein, and the whole tasteless tale still threatens to contaminate the monarchy. I cannot see how any member of the Royal Family would want to be seen in public with the Yorks again. It was awkward enough at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral last week, when it was blindingly obvious that William wanted nothing whatsoever to do with his uncle or aunt.
And it will add leverage to the King’s attempt to persuade his brother to move out of Royal Lodge to something rather less grand.
If you look back at Ferguson’s book, written many years ago, she talks about herself as unworthy, unattractive and unaccomplished. She had imposter syndrome when she married her Prince and couldn’t believe that people loved her on her wedding day. But they did.
It was, however, the late Queen’s one-time private secretary, Lord Charteris, who called her out. He was quoted as saying that the Duchess was “vulgar, vulgar, vulgar”.
The words understandably stung her, but she ended her book by saying: “He was right, I was never cut out for royalty ”. She has just proved it once and for all.
