ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Lawmakers, activists, and union leaders will gather on Tuesday morning to call for Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign a series of bills to address violence in prisons.
Robert Ricks, the father of Robert Brooks, is expected to be among the speakers. Bodycam video shows prison guards beating the Greece man in December at Marcy Correctional Facility. He died in the hospital the next day.
The advocates will urge Hochul to sign the Prison Omnibus Package, which includes nine measures aimed at keeping inmates safe and holding prison staff accountable. The New York State Legislature passed five of these measures earlier this year.
Those measures include 24/7 fixed cameras in common areas of prisons and requiring prison staff to notify family members within 24 hours of an inmate’s death. In addition, the measures aim to expand prison oversight organizations such as the State Commission of Correction and Correctional Association of New York.
Assemblyman Demond Meeks’ office will host the meeting. On Monday, four former prison guards pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Brooks’ death.
