Ruben Amorim’s future will be decided by Manchester United’s expectations rather than his side’s progression.
That is according to talkSPORT’s Danny Murphy, who does not expect the Portuguese to reach the end of his Red Devils deal.
Amorim remains under pressure in the Old Trafford hot seat after a difficult first 10 months in charge.
Despite a hard-fought victory over Chelsea on Saturday, he has just nine league wins to his name since replacing Erik ten Hag in November.
Murphy is doubtful the 2-1 win can inspire Amorim’s side to put a run of results together in the coming weeks.
The former Liverpool midfielder told White & Jordan: “They haven’t shown any signs that they’re going to when they’ve had good performances or good wins before to then go on a run. They haven’t done it.
“So no, I wouldn’t say you can trust them but there will be a lot of hope there especially now they’ve got players back fit like (Matheus) Cunha.
“I find myself saying this bizarrely, knowing that there will be criticism of it, there’s actually been some positives for United to begin this season.
“I’ve seen every game and that system has become less of a problem. It’s been more about the personnel within the system.
“I thought the first game against Arsenal, they should have won and lost.
“They battered Burnley for the majority of it, ended up throwing a goal or two away to make it hard work but he still won the first half at Fulham and they should have been a couple of goals up.
“There’s been some good bits. There’s been some progression.”
talkSPORTMurphy has seen positives from United this season but doubts Amorim can match expectations[/caption]Amorim’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2027, but Murphy does not expect him to still be at the helm at the start of that year.
When asked by Jim White, he admitted: “I’d be surprised.”
Murphy continued: “I’d be surprised because I think the level of progression that we will see won’t match (the) expectation.”
Amorim’s United future
Amorim has picked up 19 wins from 48 matches across all competitions as United boss.
It follows the club’s worst season in the Premier League era last term as they finished 15th in the table.
As a result, the Red Devils are not in Europe this season and have already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Grimsby.
United’s win over Chelsea was only their ninth in the league since Amorim’s appointmentGettyAmorim must secure a return to continental competition this term, though, talkSPORT understands.
Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reiterated to his manager the need for results to improve last week.
Following the win over Chelsea, United sit 11th in the Premier League after six matches.
However, they are just three points adrift of the top four ahead of a trip to Brentford this weekend.
The Red Devils have not been absent from European competition for consecutive seasons since British clubs were banned between 1985 and 1990.
