After bye week, Arizona Wildcats look to continue early momentum into Big 12 play

Coming off of a bye week, the Arizona Wildcats (3-0) will be heading on the road for the first time this season to face No. 14 Iowa State (4-0) to start conference play.

The Wildcats have played well in their first three matchups, most recently defeating Kansas State 23-17. But even though the team is red-hot, outscoring their opponents a combined 111-26, head coach Brent Brennan isn’t unhappy with when the bye came.

“I think the good news is that we played some good football leading up to it,” Brennan told reporters on Monday. “It did give us a chance to do a little bit of self-scout(ing) and (to) dive back into some fundamental stuff and work on some situational football.

Also, getting ready for the upcoming opponent which is obviously one of the best teams in our conference, it’s on the road in a tough environment, there’s so many things that come with this game.”

Iowa State comes into the matchup undefeated since playing in the Big 12 championship last year. The program is 68-51 since Matt Campbell took over as head coach in 2016.

“I have incredible respect for coach Campbell and that staff there,” Brennan said. “I think that’s one of those deals where he took over a program that had been up and down and he’s made it a consistent, sustainable winner, something we talk about wanting to do here at the University of Arizona.

I just have an incredible amount of respect for him and his staff and how they’ve built it. It’s been incredibly impressive to watch.”

The game doubles as the Wildcats’ first Big 12 game in addition to being on the road, and Brennan expects all their road games to come with difficult environments.

“Every stadium on the road in this conference is a monster,” Brennan said. “Every road game that we play is sold out. Everywhere the crowd is all over your [expletive] the moment you get off the bus. It’s just part of playing in this conference.”

Arizona’s early success has been a team effort, cultivated by a culture and system of full effort that players have bought into.

“The players have done a great job of embracing (the system) and understanding that when they’re on the field, the standard is red line … and that needs to show up or else we’re going to put somebody else out there,” Brennan said.

The defense in particular has played exceptionally well, only allowing two touchdowns and two plays of more than 30 yards in the first three games. While Brennan is happy with the success, he is also looking to build upon it and continue to grow as the season goes on.

“I do think we’re off to a good start, and now, can (open field tackling) improve?” Brennan said. “Can we get better at it? Can we actually continue to elevate and accelerate our process toward being collectively great tacklers? And that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Arizona-Iowa State will air on ESPN on Saturday at 4 p.m. MST.
