ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Concerns about the use of Tylenol during pregnancy and its potential link to autism have been raised, but experts say more research is needed.
President Trump and his administration held a press conference Monday suggesting Tylenol use during pregnancy causes autism.
Jennifer Parks, a clinic assessment specialist at the Arc of Monroe, said from the research she has seen so far, there have not been many large peer-reviewed studies about the use of Tylenol during pregnancy and its link to autism.
“Correlation does not necessarily mean causation, so I think a lot more research has to be done in this area,” she said.
Parks, who is the mother of a 6-year-old boy with autism, expressed her concerns about the implications for pregnant mothers. In her job, she assesses whether someone meets the diagnostic criteria for autism.
“This is just another added layer, and without the right amount of research into this, I’m really afraid that women are going to maybe not take a medication that could help,” Parks said. “I mean, there have been studies that show high fevers can have negative impacts on fetal development.”
Parks said there are many theories about what might cause autism, but it has not been narrowed down to any single cause.
Parks advised pregnant women to speak with their doctors to get the most up-to-date and correct information.
