COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A 3-year-old is dead and his mother facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter Monday after Columbus police say the toddler accidentally shot himself.
Columbus police were sent Monday to Kokiak Drive, a street in a neighborhood north of Canal Winchester on the Southeast Side, at 8:55 a.m. Officers found Cartier Smith, 3, had been shot. Medics took him to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 9:51 a.m.
Police say that Smith gained access to an unsecured handgun inside the family residence and accidentally shot himself. They also say the gun was not secured because of the actions of his mother, Carley Dials, 29.
Dials was arrested and taken to the Franklin County Jail. She is scheduled to be in court Tuesday morning.
