IF your child loves all things beauty and you want to give a gift that’s sure to impress this Christmas, you’ve come to the right place.
Rather than breaking the bank on expensive beauty advent calendars which can set shoppers back hundreds of pounds, there’s a new trend parents are doing that kids are sure to love.
Posting on social media, a savvy mother named Nikki explained how rather than spending £260 on a Space NK advent calendar, or making a dent in her purse with the £275 alternative from Liberty, she found an advent calendar for free and is now filling it with bargain buys.
Whilst Nikki has been stocking up on purse-friendly products from charity shops, she’s also bought reduced items for the advent calendar from car boot sales and Primark.
Eager to show it off with others, the bargain hunter shared a short clip online and said: “I’m a mum-of-three and I’m always looking for budget gift ideas.
“Last year I gifted my daughter six months of beauty boxes – I made these myself and this year I’m planning on doing the same thing.
“However, I also set myself the challenge of creating a DIY advent calendar.”
The busy mum, who often shares tips, tricks and life hacks online, continued: “Now I have some rules about how I source these items.
“I’m happy to pick them up from the charity shops or the boot sales, but they have to be new and sealed.”
Following this, the content creator showed off her haul of goodies, which included make-up, an eye mask, bath salts, body lotion, hand cream and more.
She then added: “Each item cannot be more than £1, so a gift set is ok if I’m going to divide up the items.
“That way this advent calendar will not cost me more than £25. In fact it’s probably come in a lot cheaper than that.”
Nikki acknowledged: “I started with the Christmas-themed items and then I’ve added in some of the other ones [body spay and blemish patches].
“I’m always on the look out for a bargain and Primark always comes up with the goods for reduced items.
How to save money on Christmas shopping
Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save money on your Christmas shopping.
Limit the amount of presents – buying presents for all your family and friends can cost a bomb.
Instead, why not organise a Secret Santa between your inner circles so you’re not having to buy multiple presents.
Plan ahead – if you’ve got the stamina and budget, it’s worth buying your Christmas presents for the following year in the January sales.
Make sure you shop around for the best deals by using price comparison sites so you’re not forking out more than you should though.
Buy in Boxing Day sales – some retailers start their main Christmas sales early so you can actually snap up a bargain before December 25.
Delivery may cost you a bit more, but it can be worth it if the savings are decent.
Shop via outlet stores – you can save loads of money shopping via outlet stores like Amazon Warehouse or Office Offcuts.
They work by selling returned or slightly damaged products at a discounted rate, but usually any wear and tear is minor.
“To make this even cheaper, I did source the advent calendar itself off a local free site.”
Thrilled with the affordable yet fabulous gift, the mother beamed: “This is finished and I think it looks fantastic.”
