WATCH: Tom Brady’s Breakdown of Caleb Williams’ Fabulous Flea Flicker

The Tom Brady broadcast experience hasn’t gone swimmingly, but I thought the future Pro Football Hall of Famer was superb on the call for FOX during the Chicago Bears’ 31-14 win against the Dallas Cowboys.

Brady, who is in his second year as the color analyst on the FOX A-team broadcast, did some of his best work while breaking down the Caleb Williams flea flicker touchdown pass to rookie Luther Burden III. I’m so glad the folks at Awful Announcing clipped this, because it is worth re-sharing:

If you came for the flea flicker, you got it above. But you should really stay for the Tom Brady commentary, which I’ve transcribed below:

“Here’s Burden at the top. Zaccheaus on the over route. He lollies, and then he’s gone. Lolly off the ball, and then as soon as you feel that safety settle his feet, you take off. But how about that throw? Basically, flat-footed. … You see the safety react. And then you run what we call a high-7 route. A 7-route is to the corner of the end zone. You take it high. They drafted Burden for his speed. They drafted Caleb Williams for his arm. And they are looking forward to that connection for years to come.”

That 2-minute, 33-second clip has everything. Yes, it was a fun highlight that we’ll be playing in our heads for a while. Heck, that throw — on its own — will live in my head rent-free for the foreseeable future. But with that being said, Tom Brady’s breakdown of the play is everything you want from a clip. He provides the perspective of the quarterback, breaks down the route combination in an easily digestible way, and even tosses in a little anecdote about how the Caleb Williams and Luther Burden III combo will hopefully work in the years to come.

Tom Brady graded out well as a broadcaster in Week 3

I do not think I have been unfair with my criticism of Tom Brady as a broadcaster, but I know that I have had plenty of it since he took over last season. It is a tough job. As someone who has been on live TV, I can vouch for the gig not being as easy as it looks. And it certainly isn’t as easy as “open mouth, say things when the red light goes on,” which is what some might suggest. Perhaps Brady is getting the hang of this broadcasting thing.

At a minimum, I think we are starting to see what Tom Brady can bring to the table as a broadcaster on FOX’s top team. Brady has an intimate knowledge of quarterback play and what it takes to succeed at the highest level. Anytime Brady can offer up insight into what a quarterback is feeling and seeing in a moment, he should be able to do so with no hesitation. I imagine that having an established personal relationship with Caleb Williams helps. But that doesn’t matter if you can’t verbalize important things within the confines of the action. Brady did that throughout the game. It was refreshing.

In the end, it was a moment like the one above that made me want to drive home how important those production meetings can be with this post. The conflict of interest stuff is what it is, and it isn’t worth beating that dead horse. However, the value of those meetings is that they allow broadcasters to relay information to viewers and fans on the other side. Tom Brady should be a conduit to the people in his role as a broadcaster. And I think he nailed it with how he handled things in the Week 3 broadcast.
