Man Utd prioritise transfer for major keeper despite Senne Lammens’ arrival as Ruben Amorim admits he is missing a No1

MANCHESTER UNITED have prioritised a major goalkeeper signing next year.

United head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed last week that United do not have an outright No.1 ‘keeper following the £18.2million deadline day signing of Senne Lammens.

Altay Bayindir has started all of their Premier League matches but has been a jittery presence and was at fault for goals against Arsenal and Burnley.

The error-prone Andre Onana has joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan yet is highly unlikely to reclaim the No.1 spot at United.

AC Milan custodian Mike Maignan is out of contract next year and United recently dealt with his representatives as Bryan Mbeumo is among their clients.

United failed with a loan enquiry for Aston Villa goalie Emiliano Martinez, whose contract runs until 2029, in the summer.

Martinez, 33, wanted to join United and was left out of Villa’s squad for their 3-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace amid a lack of focus.

Bayindir joined United from Fenerbahce in a £4.3m move two years ago as back-up to Onana, who arrived the same summer.

Third-choice ‘keeper Tom Heaton turns 40 in April and could retire at the end of the season.

Heaton has not played a game since February 2023 and appeared only three times since he rejoined United in July 2021.

United also plan to heavily invest in at least one central midfielder. Brighton enforcer Carlos Baleba has been identified as a potential upgrade.

United were unable to finance a major move for a midfielder in the recent transfer window due to the inability to shift Casemiro but the 33-year-old is set to be released when his contract expires next year.

Casemiro is one of United’s highest earners on £300,000-a-week, though his salary has been reduced by 25 per cent with the club still out of the Champions League.

The Brazilian’s removal from the wage bill would give United the headroom to finance a major move for a replacement.

United sources claimed a new midfielder was not a priority in the summer window, citing the versatility of Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.

However, Casemiro, Mainoo and Ugarte are the only out-and-out midfielders, inspirational club captain Fernandes has entered the final two years of his contract and Mount has endured an injury-plagued two years at United.

Ugarte has started all but one of United’s five Premier League fixtures on the bench this term and Mainoo is yet to start in the league.

Baleba, 21, was substituted at half-time on Saturday as Brighton squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home to Tottenham.

The Cameroon international is under contract until 2028 and Brighton have the option of an additional year.
