Things are getting heated inside the Kansas City Chiefs organization.
With the Chiefs having their worst start to a season in the Patrick Mahomes era, they are also now having to contend with a disgruntled Travis Kelce.
After injuring his own teammate Xavier Worthy during the first drive of their season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil – a game in which the Chiefs lost 27-21 – Kelce got into trouble in Week 2.
Kelce fined by NFL for Week 2 celebration
The star tight end was fined for what the NFL deemed to be “obscene gestures” made towards the Philadelphia Eagles sideline during the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss in their Super Bowl LIX rematch.
After coming up with a 23-yard gain from a Mahomes pass during a Chiefs – who were trailing 13-10 at the time – drive in the third quarter, Kelce celebrated by animatedly gesturing toward his groin area.
Although this was missed by the game officials, the clip went viral online, and the league took note, retrospectively handing him a $14,491 fine for his actions.
His celebration, however, was in vain as that very same drive, the 35-year-old would go on to have a crucial goal-line drop which turned into an Eagles interception after safety Andrew Mukuba came up with the ball.
The Birds ultimately got the last laugh, handing Kelce – who slammed his helmet in frustration – and Kansas City their first 0-2 start since the 2014 season.
Kelce and Reid get into (another) scuffle
It went from bad to worse for Kelce, though.
After receiving his fine in Week 2, he followed that performance up by getting into a screaming match with Chiefs coach Andy Reid on the sidelines in their Week 3 road game against the New York Giants at Met Life Stadium.
At this point, it comes hardly as a surprise that the two future Hall of Famers got into such a heated exchange, with the pair also having previously got into it during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.
This time, though, Reid sought out his veteran tight end and hit him in the pads with his chest and got all up in Kelce’s face shouting him, visibly frustrated after the Chiefs walked off the field after an unsuccessful drive.

“Andy Reid sick of his antics on the sideline .. yelling every time s*** ain’t going his way. Love the Body Check by Andy Reid!” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“Travis Kelce needs to know his role and SHUT his mouth,” another fan commented.
“It’s called passion people, chill out. Heat of the moment these two go way back, you’d rather see that than heads down and crying on the bench,” a third wrote.
Since 1990, only 12.2 percent of 0-2 teams have gone on to make the playoffs, so a win against a winless Russell Wilson and co was arguably a crucial one for the Chiefs, who have reached the Super Bowl five times in the last six campaigns.
Fortunately, franchise quarterback Mahomes spearheaded his team to a 22-9 victory over the G-Men on Sunday, completing 22 of his 37 pass attempts for 224 yards and a touchdown.
Reid and Kelce famously went at it during the 2024 Super Bowl winGetty Mahomes had to shoulder a lot of the offensive load without Kelce’s contributionsGettyIt also helped that Wilson threw two interceptions in a poor follow-up performance to his career-high game against the Dallas Cowboys in the Giants’ Week 2 loss.
Tyquan Thornton was a surprise standout of the Chiefs’ depleted receiving crop, racking up 71 yards and a touchdown from just five receptions.
JuJu Smith-Schuster (55 yards) and Hollywood Brown (42 yards) also came up big, each averaging over 10 yards per reception, with 13.8 yards and 10.5 yards, respectively, with both having four receptions.
Kelce, on the other hand, had just 26 yards from four receptions as he struggled to get himself involved into the game, still needing two more touchdowns to join an elite group of those in the tight end 100 touchdown club.
Now 1-2 on the season, they have a much tougher test awaiting them in Week 4 as they host Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry and the Baltimore Ravens.
A win against their fellow AFC rivals, and Super Bowl contender, could be a real turning point in their season, but Kelce, Mahomes and Reid will all need to be on the same page going forward if they are to find success.
